Posted: 11 Dec 2014 01:37 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ceive_capable/ Ive been looking into SSTV and I was wondering if its possible for my radio to pick up SSTV? But anyway, Ive been looking into getting a Baofeng radio for use on the airsoft field but when I looked up the legality of it I got mixed opinions. My main question is, what channels, if any, can I use/transmit on without any type of license? If I cant operate it on any channels what other radios are available for around that price that are decent quality? Couldnt find anything about legality in the wiki. Thanks. submitted by Ruschnav [link] [11 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// APRS and Packet Radio Posted: 11 Dec 2014 11:04 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._packet_radio/ New to amateur, even newer to APRS and Packet. I have a few questions about these digital systems. First, my young man dream of 20 years ago was to use packet radio to do email, surf the web, etc. Now, its not so important to me, but Id like to give it a try. I have a Kenwood TH-D72a that has a built in TNC. Can I actually hook it to my laptop and use it as a modem? If so, how? What else can I do with packet radio? Regarding APRS, I have my radio set to send a smart beacon, but I get so few hits, that Im thinking it just isnt worth it. Is it me? Or are digipeters (thats the right term, isnt it?) just not very abundant? I drive the Palisades Interstate Parkway in northern New Jersey. The only ack of my position is from the Columbia University repeater. submitted by gmarch [link] [7 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// APRS Weather Station & iGate in Galway (Ireland) Posted: 11 Dec 2014 01:28 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...alway_ireland/ submitted by nowonmai [link] [comment] /////////////////////////////////////////// Boy Scouts 2014 Jamboree On The Air Report Shows Drop in Participation || What have you done with JOTA - What can we do for JOTA? What may be the source of it? Posted: 11 Dec 2014 06:21 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...e_signal_what/ I know that the shielding on my headphones(plantronics gamecom 367) may not be good and this is a radio interference(and not a ground loop nor mains hum). I am just curious, what may produce such signals? Each 5 seconds, 1 second "transmission" is heard. Between them there are ticking sounds. There are some irregularities in those ticks which may or may not be caused by a mediocre soundcard. Full cable length is 2m, about 1.6m to on/off switch, sound card input runs at 192kHz, 16bit. Heres the 1 minute recording. I realize that signal strength may be too low for adequate analysis, but well, thats all this thing can get. Sorry for bad engrish. submitted by SpaRrRly [link] [5 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Hey, /r/amateurradio, I'm working on a puzzle that may involve Morse Code. Care to help? Posted: 10 Dec 2014 10:19 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...zzle_that_may/ Hey all! First off, I had no idea this sub existed before today and Im impressed by how friendly this community is. You guys are awesome. Now, some back story. Since last holiday season, the card game "Cards Against Humanity" has a promotion where you give them $15 or so, and they send you fun things in the mail. BUT, hidden amongst these items are encoded messages. I believe I have stumbled upon one of said messages in morse code. I know nothing about morse code, so I figured Id ask the pros. Any guidance would be immensely appreciated. Cheers. Note1: The flash mostly obscures a dot on the line coming from the bottom of the a in snap. Though it appears to be "--.-" , it is actually "--.-." Note2: Also, I believe the message is further encoded, further complicating things. submitted by JayWillyFF [link] [5 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// A Question about a Yagi Antenna that I am going to build tomorrow. Posted: 10 Dec 2014 09:19 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...at_i_am_going/ After a couple weeks of planning and gathering supplies, Im building a dual band 2m/70cm Yagi antenna tomorrow, using the exact measurements and method provided by this video by "Zed Zeds" Workshop. The only difference is that in the above-linked video, Zed is building it using steel coat-hangers, where as I will be using 1/8th inch stainless steel rods that I imagine are slightly thicker. Zed says: "If the antenna is built as shown then it should not need much tuning if any." and "Although the dimensions shown in the diagram are for use with steel coat hangers, you can experiment with other materials such as welding rods, stainless steel rods, etc." My question is: since I am using a different material for the elements, will I have to space or trim the elements at a different length? How do I know if i do, and how to? I dont have any equipment that could help me tune the antenna. submitted by altoidsjedi [link] [3 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Need help with power distribution for mobile install. Posted: 10 Dec 2014 04:55 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...on_for_mobile/ Im going to be doing a multi-unit mobile install this weekend, and have a few questions. I need a power distribution block capable of handling at least 3 devices, has its own fuses, and is small enough to mount under the passenger seat of your average car. I havent found anything I liked yet, which is why Im enlisting /r/amateurradios help with this. Does anyone have any suggestions? Links would be appreciated. submitted by Start_button [link] [9 comments] |
