I passed the General. Posted: 13 Dec 2014 08:07 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...d_the_general/ I wasnt very optimistic. There were two sub-elements I didnt even get around to studying, so I was sure I would fail. Posted: 13 Dec 2014 01:40 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...icence_number/ I was wondering how everyone chose their license number! Posted: 13 Dec 2014 01:29 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...s_to_baofengs/ Ive seen some hate about how cheap the radios are and have even heard someone say that "...no self respecting operator would own one", on the air. I own 2 of them(UV-82L). I like them. If it werent for the low cost I would not have been able to get a rig, which would have dissuaded me from getting my ticket. Not everyone can afford a $1k for a rig. I dont think its fair that some like to treat new Hams as lower class operators just because they use a cheap HT. I do get that the price is a double edge sword, with unlicensed transmissions coming from these radios, jammers etc. However, I personally think the good operators that get and learn from them far out weighs the idiots that get them. /rant submitted by spaghettibeans [link] [39 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Must be a contest today... Posted: 13 Dec 2014 06:31 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._and_everyday/ So my car was broken into again, this time whomever did it just wanted to be destructive and tore the control head of my D710 out and thew it in the yard and stole my mic. This happened in my own driveway in a quiet little suburban community. I suspect it was bored teenagers here locally just trying to prove how bad-ass they arent. I think that Im going to take the radio gear out of my car for a while, this is getting expensive. But a local "rants-and-raves" Facebook page has been getting a lot of posts lately of people having their cars and houses broken into and people literally stealing from under their Christmas trees and stealing UPS/FedEx/USPS/etc packages left on their porches. So be careful out there folks. Protect your gear and watch your six. The world can be a crappy place anytime of the year, but it would especially suck to have something like this happen this time of year! Im going to look into the ARRL Equipment Insurance and see if it can help in the future. Anyone else use it? Ill finish this post up with some common sense, but wise, precautions that a local locksmith posted on that rants/raves page: LOCK ALL DOORS. Car doors, house doors, windows, gates, etc. This sounds like a given, but these criminals just have to walk by and check your door and POOF they could be in. Even if you are only going to be gone a few minutes, lock all the doors! Lock your car door every time you walk out of sight. Often times criminals take the path of least resistance. If there are two houses on a street, and one has a locked door and the other doesnt, guess who just became the target? Keep valuables out of sight! Keep valuables in your trunk. Most trunk doors have valet switches so that they only can be opened with a key, not from inside the car. That way if they get into your car, they cannot pop the trunk! Consider increasing the security of your house. Upgrade the locks, put one sided bolts on the doors, alarm system, cameras, etc. This goes back to the path of least resistance again. If there are 10 houses on a street, and 1 of them has cameras and an alarm system sign out front, guess which house just went to the bottom of the list? So on that note, everyone out there have a Merry Christmas and be safe. (there a lot of people in the sub now, so if you dont do the Christmas thing, just have a good day then, k?) submitted by nvertedflyer [link] [8 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Yaesu still pushing C4FM (New Yaesu FT-2D Touch Screen with C4FM FDMA/FM, GPS, and APRS). What material can I find in a typical hardware store (like Lowe's or Home Depot) that I can make the Reflector, Fed, and Director Elements out of? Posted: 13 Dec 2014 01:25 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...aterial_can_i/ Im building a dual-band 2 Meter/70cm band Yagi antenna based on plans from Zed Zeds Workbench. I plan to use 6 Elements for the 70 cm side, and 4 elements for the 2m of the antenna. The plans I am following use 1/8th inch Stainless Steel rods for the elements, but it seems that Stainless Steel is one of the worse materials (in terms of being a good conductor of radio waves) to make an antenna out of. What can I find in my typical hardware store that I can use as the elements (which are good conductors, like copper and aluminum)? I live near many Home Depot and Lowes stores. If it helps, I live in the Inland Empire of Southern California, in case you know any good "mom nd pop" shops that could have something I can use. submitted by altoidsjedi [link] [2 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// The new Yaesu FT-991 - finally, a replacement for the FT-857? Posted: 13 Dec 2014 12:59 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ement_for_the/ Official page The FT-991 Yaesus newest HF/VHF/UHF all-mode radio. Built-in ATU and roofing filters standard. No pricing information yet. It looks pretty small but with a nice big display. It could make a good shack-in-a-box for a small station, a formidable mobile setup, or you could even use it portable in the field. If it has satellite capability, then this could be a killer radio for working the linear transponder satellites. Im not sure how I feel about Yaesus recent trend to "touchscreen ALL the radios!" As someone who likes to operate portable, it definitely makes it feel less rugged. Posted: 13 Dec 2014 05:51 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._an_swr_meter/ Does anyone have some good links that explains what an SWR meter measures and how you use one to tune your antenna? I have some very basic understanding that Ive pieced together, but Id like a more "formal" training on the subject. As some of you may have read in a previous post, I had to compromise on my mobile antenna and went with a cheap Tram 1191 glass mount antenna for now. I was using it with decent results, but one of the local ham guys suggested I peal the sticker off the antenna to get to the adjustment screw and adjust it to optimize my signal. So, I went and bought a Workman VHF-UHF SWR Wattmeter (I hope thats what I need), and would like to use it to tune the antenna. Unfortunately, this unit has female UHF connectors on both sides. I would have thought that it would be one female and one male? Anyway, no real instructions to speak of... Hence my request. :-) submitted by gmarch [link] [9 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Help with a Motorola Radius Posted: 12 Dec 2014 05:58 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...torola_radius/ I need to reprogram a Motorola Radius, and can find very little in the way of available resources. Do these still require proprietary software, or has someone come up with a free/open solution for programming them? submitted by Obliterous [link] [5 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Does anyone remember this cheap "world radio"? (UK amateurs might) Posted: 12 Dec 2014 03:58 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...orld_radio_uk/ Hi, I went through my old stuff lately and found something like this (vendors photo). I remember a webpage with a list of circuit bending mods and documentation for this radio (sold under a different brand) which was available for 2.50 £ in some sale. It was a cheap source of LCD frequency counters and HF receivers around 2005. Im most interested in the SSB mod (where do I connect the IF generator?). Its based around the Sony CXA1691BM AM/FM receiver IC. The PCB is marked KK-939H PCB 2001v10.5. I cant find anything in the manual. Does anyone know if the VX-6 is capable of easily toggling between alpha and freq. display while in memory mode? submitted by k6lcm [link] [2 comments] |
