"Crossbanding" or "Sky Command"

I have a Kenwood TH-D72A, and I started reading about "Sky Command". Ive
also been thinking of getting a unit for my house, but I like the idea of
being able to walk around while talking.
What would I need to do with with an HT like the D72A? From what I can tell
(and the docs are scarce), it looks like Id need an expensive HF rig in my
house. I was hoping to get away with a cheaper mobile unit hooked up to a
power supply and a good antenna.
Thoughts? Thanks... submitted by gmarch

Solid bare wire vs insulated wire elements? Thick or thin?

Posted: 15 Dec 2014 02:03 PM PST

In general, is there any practical difference in materials (radio
performance not weight) when building antennas? Does it matter if the wire
is thin or thick?
Does it make sense to put insulating material like pvc around elements to
protect them a bit from the weather or should they just be left bare for
better reception? submitted by CyFus

KX9X/4 update as of Sunday evening 12/15

http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._evening_1215/

Hi all-
Been on Cudjoe Key in grid EL94 for two days. So far I have 25 QSOs on the
SO50 FM satellite in 3 passes. I have had no luck with QSOs via the ISS
digipeater. Im hearing it, but to working anybody.
On HF Im running QRP with 5w and an Inverted-L with my counterpoise thrown
into the ocean. Worked about 50 stations in the 10m contest in a very
casual effort..
Biggest news is that I will activate Pigeon Key, FL on Tuesday from ~ 1600
UTC to ~1900 UTC for the US islands program. This will be on as many HF
bands as I can muster. Will be traveling light for this trip.
Thursday I will kayak to either Gopher Key or Pirates Cove Island. Neither
of those have ever been on the air before. Those will be SSB/CW.
There will also be operations from my Home Base of Cudjoe Key, including
some RTTY. That will happen usually in the late afternoon /evening.
US Island designators:
Pigeon Key: FL437S
Gopher Key: FL502
Pirates Cove Island: FL509
Cudjoe Key: FL075S
All of these islands count for NA-062 in the Islands On The air program,
too.
Hope to work ya somewhere. More updates as I have them.

ICOM 2350 mic question

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 05:09 PM PST
http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio..._mic_question/

Ok, so I just bought an IC-2350 as I mentioned in a earlier post. The deal
didnt include a mic so I need to find one. According to the manual it takes
an HM-95 witch I cant find on Ebay. I tried an HM-133S and it wont key up.
I have got an HM-100T that I can key it up yet the output volume doesnt
seem to be high enough. There doesnt appear to be a setting for mic gain.
Does anyone have any ideas what other mics might work with this model?
