/////////////////////////////////////////// Weekly Q&A Thread [12/12/2014] Posted: 12 Dec 2014 12:02 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...read_12122014/ Heres your chance to ask questions that you think may have been asked before, or that might not require their own thread. This is a great place to get answers about choosing or operating first radios, as these threads often get ignored due to their frequent reappearance on the front page. Youll have lots of eyes here. No question is a dumb question! Upvote questions and good answers. It improves their visibility! submitted by AutoModerator [link] [14 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// DB1NTO - very small APRS Transceiver with MicroAPRS Posted: 16 Dec 2014 11:08 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ith_microaprs/ submitted by reststrahlenbande [link] [4 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Hallicrafter S-95 Civil Patrol Radio. I have one of these but I have no idea what type of antenna to use to see if it works. Posted: 16 Dec 2014 02:56 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...g_on_at_14076/ Screenshot Dont know what is going on but there is some god-awful data being transmitted and its wiping out everything. Seems like I have problem with my soundcard - Im running Arch and that weird "climbing" pattern only occurs when the radio output is plugged into the mic - and if youll notice, the JJT65 signals dont exhibit the pattern. What on earth? submitted by minorsecond [link] [3 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Radio Amateur Society of Thailand: Communication Modes of Amateur Radio Posted: 16 Dec 2014 08:58 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...communication/ submitted by DarkStarPDX [link] [2 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// using APRS to map 2m simplex footprint Posted: 16 Dec 2014 04:52 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...lex_footprint/ How difficult would it be to configure Aprx (or a different APRS program) to log only packets with a direct RF path (disregarding any digipeated packets) and then map each those direct RF targets? I would want to map every direct packet received over a period of a few days/weeks. I was thinking that it would be a great way to run a practical test of a new 2 meter antenna setup. Letting the logger run a few days/weeks, would approximate the simplex footprint of your station. It might be interesting when experimenting with new antennas and/or antenna placement. It might help answer the question: what does another 4 of height get me? I was thinking about logging all packets received. Then use a database program to strip away the digipeated packets. I am not sure about the mapping. Possibly dump all the packets into Xastir? submitted by rem1473 [link] [11 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Coast-to-coast drive - operating ideas? Posted: 16 Dec 2014 12:14 AM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...erating_ideas/ So in a few hours Ill be enroute from Savannah, GA to just north of Seattle, WA. http://i.imgur.com/0WlXLqe.jpg The blue highlighted route is the most likely route. Will be stopping at HRO Atlanta (Yay!) to get a Larsen 2/70 magmount setup as Ill be beaconing APRS along the wayended up getting a diamond dual band setup, track me via APRS here( http://aprs.fi/#!call=a%2FKG7NJQ-7&t...3600&tail=3600 ) will be planning on trying to work an amsat or two along the week journey with my ELK antenna, have yet to look at future passes. Sadly did not have enough time to get a HF hamstick setup, bummer but always next time. Have been entertaining the idea of an alexloop for some time, we shall see what I walk away from HRO with! For those who may want to try to work me for fun or for WAS/RWAS(2m/70cm only for the time being), Ill be posting here at the end of each day to list the city/grid stopped at for the night, and in the IRC will be giving updates on more current locations. Feel free to PM if you want to try to sked or have any questions! Posted: 15 Dec 2014 05:00 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...oken_hamstick/ Hey everyone! I borrowed a 40m hamstick over the weekend but it seems to be damaged/broken - I get infinite SWR on Tx. I measured the resistance from tip to base with a multimeter and it shows an open circuit - It should show a small resistance right? Thanks, 73 submitted by diachi [link] [11 comments] /////////////////////////////////////////// Sanity Check on a Setup Posted: 15 Dec 2014 04:06 PM PST http://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio...ck_on_a_setup/ Hey all. Im a new tech and my local ham club is basically in hibernation for the winter, so Id like to solicit some feedback on my first setup here. I got a dual band slim jim from N9TAX. I was going to put it up on my roof via some sort of weighted down PVC base and mast. Im going to run LMR-400 from the antenna through the wall outside my office, to a coax port on the inside. From there, probably a patch cable to my Baofeng handheld. Sometime in January, Im getting a proper 2m/70cm transceiver and power supply. Cablewise, its going to be about 40-50 ft of LMR-400 to the antenna. PL-259 attaching to the antenna, SO-239 to the inside wall. Inside, its going to be a 5-6 foot patch cable to the handheld. PL-259 on one end/SMA female on the other end. Ill change this out when I get a real transceiver. Does this sound reasonable for a beginner setup? Thanks! submitted by snapetom [link] [8 comments] |
