We already know that Letterman is anti-gay. He banned Richard Simmons

Simmons was foolish, of course, and let Letterman talk him into doing
things like dressing as Cupid and swinging onto the stage from a cable
running over to the balcony. That's Letterman's style: Take
advantage of Simmons' desire for publicity while openly making fun of
Simmons' sexual preference. By extension, Letterman was ridiculing
all gay men.

I'll bet that he's afraid of straight guys like O'Reilly who won't let
themselves be pushed around. That's probably what was REALLY making
Letterman angry.
