GB2RS NEWS Sunday 3 June The news headlines * Amateur becomes Mayor of Cambridge * Canadians lose 136kHz and 5MHz * Major product launches at Dayton Hamvention Jenny Bailey, G0VQH, became Mayor of Cambridge in the local council election on 24 May. Jenny was first elected to Cambridge City Council in 2002, serving East Chesterton ward and becoming an executive councillor. She has spent the past 12 months as deputy Mayor. Apart from her usual civic duties, she hopes to bring a better understanding of amateur radio to local and national government. Since 2001, a number of special, time-limited authorisations have been granted to some Canadian radio amateurs to conduct experiments on 136 kHz and at 5 MHz. All of these special authorisations will expire and transmissions must cease on 30 June, 2007. Further special authorisations will depend on the outcomes of WRC-2007, scheduled for 22 October - 16 November. At the suggestion of Canada, the agenda includes a new, worldwide, secondary Amateur allocation at 135.7 - 137.8 kHz. A secondary allocation near 5 MHz may also arise at WRC-2007 as a consideration in the review of radio services in the band 4 - 10 MHz. A number of major companies chose last weekend's Dayton Hamvention to launch new products. Elecraft, FlexRadio, Icom, TenTec, Kenwood and Yaesu all announced new transceivers. Dishtronix and Tokyo Hy-Power announced kilowatt-class solid state linears, and other well-known names such as MFJ and Palstar also had new offerings. Look for news of these and other new products in forthcoming issues of RadCom. CNN International is to end its analogue satellite distribution in Europe on 4 June, when its current contract with Astra expires. CNNI is already available free-to-air via other satellites and even terrestrially via DVB-T in some areas. The analogue satellite transmissions at 19.2 degrees East are still used by around half the satellite viewers in Germany, but SES Astra wants to phase out the analogue services and complete its transition to digital. Current DAB radios may be unable to receive anything in a few years time, according to Pure Digital. This is due to the introduction of DAB Plus, which uses the new AAC Plus audio coding. The new DAB standard is incompatible with existing DAB receivers, and will render them obsolete. The new coding system is twice as efficient as the MP2 system currently in use, meaning that the number of channels per multiplex could double. Manufacturers are expected to quietly switch to producing dual standard receivers before any changeover occurs. The British DAB system is unlikely to be affected for many years. And now for the details of rallies and events for the coming week [Note to newsreaders: please exercise your judgement on which of the 3 June events to read, based on your service area and time of transmission]. 2 On Sunday 3 June the Red Rose QRP Festival takes place from 11am at Formby Hall, Alder Street, Atherton, Manchester. A special certificate will be available for contacting at least 10 members; details can be found at www.yccc.org. Richard, M0EAZ, is currently sailing across the Atlantic and regularly checks in to the Maritime Mobile net on 14.300MHz at 2100z each evening. His signals are reported as good, despite using just 100W to a back-stay antenna, and would welcome calls. Celebrating the 750th anniversary of Krakow's city rights is HF750C, which will be active until 30 June. QSL via SP9BRP. Expect also a large number of local operators to use special prefix SN0 during the year. Now the solar factual data for the period from 21 to the 27 May compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS. Despite a magnetically complex sunspot group that was visible it failed to produce any solar flares. Solar activity was very low. Gradually the sunspot group decayed and by the 24th it had disappeared. Solar flux levels declined from 73 units on the 21st to 67 by the 27th. The average was 70 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 27th was 73, that's one unit down on last week. X-ray flux levels was A2.2 units on the 21st but then declined to below the A1 level for the remainder of the period. Geomagnetic activity started at quiet levels with an Ap index of 6 units on the 21st. Activity increased to sub-storm levels on the 23rd, this disturbance is possibly due to a filament disappearance on the 19th of May. A high-speed coronal hole disturbance caught the original disturbance and this lasted through to the 27th. The most disturbed day was the 23rd with an Ap of 42 units. The average was Ap 19 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increased from 430 kilometres per second on the 23rd to 750 by the 26th. Particle densities were low except for the 22nd, which increased to 36 particles per cubic centimetre on the 22nd. Bz varied between minus 11 and plus 7 nanoTeslas during the disappearing filament disturbance and between minus and plus 7 nanoTeslas during the coronal hole disturbance the next day. 4 The magnetic disturbances resulted in periods when HF propagation was markedly degraded, particularly over the North America path. Auroral propagation occurred at 50 and 144MHz from late morning on the 23rd, resuming on the 24th. Sporadic-E was reported at 28 and 50MHz on most days. There were several reports of double-hop contacts with the eastern Mediterranean area on Six, while the new Athens 4-metre beacon was heard in the UK for the first time. And finally the solar forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. Solar activity is expected to be very low. Solar flux levels should slowly decline and by next weekend be around the 70 mark. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be unsettled today and tomorrow due to a recurring coronal hole. Activity will then decline to quiet levels for the remainder of the period. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be about 10MHz. Paths this week to Australia should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 20MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 16MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 0900 and 1200 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take place almost daily with openings on 28MHz and 50MHz. Openings on 70MHz can be expected on some days and openings on 144MHz cannot be ruled out. And that's all for this week from the propagation team. 5 Next, the Local News: Please note that details of all RSGB-affiliated clubs and societies can be found on the RSGB website, including e-mail addresses and website links where known.
