Hmm ... this makes twice now for me. Once VE7DGL had to get hold of me

and
used Echo Link - and my HT fired up and I got the needed "heads up".

Today,
I needed to get hold of Hatton, NI5Y, and he wasn't on the internet.

Well,
I linked to his machine and he answered via his HT. It does work. There
were radios on one end in both instances.

Or is DXCC the only thing that counts? I have little use for those folks.
I'm sure some are decent, but the one time I wanted to run a phone patch
from the US Naval Hospital on Guam and the DX boys thought phone patches
shouldn't be allowed on their day ... well ... as I said, I've little use
for 'em.

While I personally am not really interested in Echolink, I think it is an
interesting hybrid. I'm glad that someone worked out the methodology
whether or not I ever make any use of it.

The methodology is really pretty simple, an internet version of a phone
patch.

The ho-hum aspect as I see it is that allowing an HT to patch into the
internet is analogous to simply using a telephone. Others may differ,
thinking this is some high tech thing to add to the ham arsenal.

In fact, it seems to me that an application would be to allow cell
phone users to call a number, patch into the net, and then speak to
hams. And since people can bootleg a number so easily, I wouldn't be
surprised if this isn't already happening.

Another thing I've had trouble with on Echolink is the voice quality.
Everyone except the local guys sound terrible. Very difficult to understand.

Thats strange, just got off Echolink thru my Link, to a freind in Texas. His
Audio sounded perfect as it always does

an Antenna.

We had a power outage recently in the Northeast. The Echolink connection to
a local 2 meter repeater was down because the RoadRunner cable system has no
battery backup in these parts.

When inclement WX hits and the phone lines are down it will be back to

Ham
Radio the way it always has been. Good old radios and antennas....and for
those with preplannning a Marine battery or two as well.

How often has your fantasy been played out? Can you give examples where

YOU
encountered that?

See above:

Newy York, September 11th, 2001.

The Midwest floods in the 90's.

Any number of hurricaines in the last 50 years in the Gulf States
and Atlantic Coast.

Need more, Vippy?

Steve, K4YZ

Steve, don't even try to cash in on Sept 11th unless you were there
and provided emergency communications via amateur radio.

Brian

"Cash in"????? Hey Steve, Brain thinks there's money in ham radio!
Should be prevail on someone to donate him a clue, maybe suggest he read
Part 97 with an eye to actually doing more than mouthing the words?

Brian thinks DICK is a dumbass.

OIn the other hand, Dick and the rest of the world KNOWS that Brian is.

Steve is guilty of doing what he has accused others of doing, riding
the coattails of those who have fallen before him for prestige and
fame.

Where did he say *he* was involved in any of those actions??? HE DIDN'T.
HAM RADIO was, you idiotic twerp.

DICK cranium, Vipul asked Steve if he had been personally involved in
emergency comms, and Steve replied with a list of disasters, including
the terrorist attacks on September 11th.

You stand corrected.
