"If ye love wealth better than liberty,
the tranquility of servitude better than the animating conquest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsel or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." Samuel Adams, speech on 1st August 1776. |

Not everyone likes veterans or thinks they are due any particular thanks. Concerning the "Bonus Army" of 1932, where veterans of The War to End All Wars (1917/1918) were due a bonus in 1945, but wanted payment early because they lost their homes in the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt is to have said: ------------ In the end, some money was paid to veterans but not without further difficulties. Within a year of the Bonus Army Incident, President Roosevelt imposed the Economy Act of 1933 which cut veterans disability allowances by 25%. In the effort to cut federal expenses, veterans were viewed as having inordinate special status over civilians. During the 1932 election campaign, he had publicly proclaimed: "No one [merely] because he wore a uniform must therefore be placed in a special class of beneficiaries over and above all other citizens. The fact of wearing a uniform does not mean that he can demand and receive from his government a benefit which no other citizen receives." ------------ Read all about it at: http://www.islandnet.com/~citizenx/bonus.html |

Brian, my boy, don't look now but old Franklin, and Eleanor who probably put those words in his mouth, since Franklin is widely reckoned to have been more than just a little bit pussy-whipped, are both dead and buried and rotted now these almost 60 years ago. Do you suggest that these views should be endorsed by the current Commander in Chief? 73, de Hans, K0HB |

I would think that Roosevelt has pretty well said what he is going to, by now! Also: It's not amazing that Roosevelt would short-change veterans. When the S.F. dockworkers went on strike during WW2, refusing to load ammo and supplies for our troops, Roosevelt ordered the shipping companies to cave to the union demands instead of having a few of the union ringleaders imprisoned, beaten or shot, as any reasonable person would do with socialist traitors who attempt to extort and undermine the country during a time of war. That's very possible, but I was quoting someone elses research, so have not verified that is what FDR actually said from a direct source. But thanks for your interest. Brian |

Your first clue that the quote is not from Roosevelt is that he is unlikely to have referred to himself as "President Roosevelt". Dave K8MN |
