Man I think I got bit by the DX bug, worked 20 meters all the time I was operating, until about 4:30 (EDT) AM this morning(Sunday). Worked a few alaska stations, a few stations in the Virgin Islands, tried to work a Hawaii station but he was working a huge pileup. For some reason I had trouble getting heard when responding to CQs. Might have been too much QRM. Was running about 50 watts into a multiband vertical. We went through 2 radios for 20m before we finally got one that worked decently, 100W into a tribander at 70 ft? that was mounted to the bucket of a cherry picker. Adam KB8MDF had a cool idea to build a 160m loop, and then split part of it off for 40m, last I talked to him saturday night when he left to get some sleep he and Dave had around 100 contacts on 40 and I can't recall how many on 160. The only station we really had any problems working was the Hawaii, the rest came back pretty fast, amazingly the Fiji station came back after only one call. 73 de Keith -- KC8TCQ Know thyself. I'm not sure of the final tally yet but it should be in the neighborhood of 26 to 27 k points. The CW duo was good for about 950 QSOs. We didn't manage a WAS on CW though--missed Alaska and Hawaii. Excellent! I worked you guys on CW. What were you running? Same rig/antenna as the last two years from here on the hill--FT-1000MP "Field and Stream", Johnson Matchbox and 200 foot skywire fed with open wire. It seems I'm never the guy to work you on FD. N8NN was the op you worked. My math skills are showing in the comments above. Score should read "2.6 to 2.7 k points". We were one of those stations which should not have been running 5A. In the middle of the night, we had only two stations running. We would have been better candidates for 3A. Members of a local Boy Scout troop visited and were given an overview of amateur radio by the county EC. They then visited all of the stations in operation. They spent the most time and showed the most interest at the CW tent. The ancient mode users had the only station doing computer logging (TR). The old ops using the old mode were responsible for about 2000 of the points and that from a single station. Dave K8MN |

This year was a sort of "shakedown cruise" for us'ns. Unfamiliar little FT-847 xcvr (MP? Not!), untried antennas, untried team, etc. so we just sorta dabbled at it for the jollies and educations. We were on the air for only 10-11 hours out of the 24 but still managed to garner over S&P 400 Qs. And that included some SSB ops too by golly. Most memorable scene: Late Sunday morning I'm milking 40 ssb at a great rate. Handed the mic and chair to Jim. I wish I'd taken a photo of the look on his face. But he sallied forth and kept the rate going. Yes he did. I asked him when it was that he last operatd phone in a contest. "Six meters AM days .. . . " Worked KP4, KP2 and that ZF1 9A station. That one was a bit of a jolt. They must have had a real blast. Figger a demonstrated 40 per hour station potential here and we gwan go after you guys for *serious* next year so heads up Heil. I've done better than that single-handed. We were one of those stations which should not have been running 5A. In the middle of the night, we had only two stations running. We would have been better candidates for 3A. Been there, done that! Also had the situation where 2-3 ops in the CW tent made more points for a 4A + GOTA station than all the rest of the effort combined. Members of a local Boy Scout troop visited and were given an overview of amateur radio by the county EC. They then visited all of the stations in operation. They spent the most time and showed the most interest at the CW tent. That's typical. Did you see my post where the middle-school teacher recounted how young people today react to Morse when properly presented? I'll repost it if you like. The ancient mode users had the only station doing computer logging (TR). Which ancient mode you talking about? Reginald A. Fessenden was on AM in 1900 and later, and working 2 way transatlantic AM by 1906. AT&T hsd SSB was on LF for the transatlantic telephone by 1927, and hams were on HF SSB by the early 1930s. The old ops using the old mode were responsible for about 2000 of the points and that from a single station. If all the rigs ran low power and you made 950 CW QSOs, that's 3800 points right there. 73 de Jim, N2EY |

It was cool enough to see our breath in the middle of the night. We got some pizza, and one of the ops brought chili to warm us up. What a combination. - Mike KB3EIA - |

We were one of those stations which should not have been running 5A. In the middle of the night, we had only two stations running. We would have been better candidates for 3A. The old ops using the old mode were responsible for about 2000 of the points and that from a single station. We were not certain how many CW ops were coming out. Fortunately, we had a CW op for about 75 percent of the time. The final tally was pretty close between CW and Phone. The GOTA station probably tipped things in favor of the Non-voice modes. I'll know in a little bit when I add up the scores. I had one of those pucker string moments when I had computer trouble after the event. But I got it fixed, and am doing newsgroup to relax before diving into the scores again. I think we were around 3500 points altogether. WE were running 2a plus the GOTA. - Mike KB3EIA - |
