Better than the alternative though. for the Marshall County WV ARES bunch, atop the hill at Grandview Park overlooking the burg of Moundsville. I'm not sure of the final tally yet but it should be in the neighborhood of 26 to 27 k points. The CW duo was good for about 950 QSOs. We didn't manage a WAS on CW though--missed Alaska and Hawaii. This year was a sort of "shakedown cruise" for us'ns. Unfamiliar little FT-847 xcvr (MP? Not!), untried antennas, untried team, etc. so we just sorta dabbled at it for the jollies and educations. We were on the air for only 10-11 hours out of the 24 but still managed to garner over S&P 400 Qs. And that included some SSB ops too by golly. Gotta train those new operators! We had some new ops, and they aren't as fast as some of the OT'ers, but so what. They will be one day. Most memorable scene: Late Sunday morning I'm milking 40 ssb at a great rate. Handed the mic and chair to Jim. I wish I'd taken a photo of the look on his face. But he sallied forth and kept the rate going. Yes he did. I asked him when it was that he last operatd phone in a contest. "Six meters AM days HAR! I hope you got a picture of Jim with a mic in his hands! Worked KP4, KP2 and that ZF1 9A station. That one was a bit of a jolt. They must have had a real blast. Figger a demonstrated 40 per hour station potential here and we gwan go after you guys for *serious* next year so heads up Heil. It was cool enough to see our breath in the middle of the night. We got some pizza, and one of the ops brought chili to warm us up. What a combination. - Mike KB3EIA - |

Man I think I got bit by the DX bug, worked 20 meters all the time I was operating, until about 4:30 (EDT) AM this morning(Sunday). Worked a few alaska stations, a few stations in the Virgin Islands, tried to work a Hawaii station but he was working a huge pileup. But the icing on the cake was Christian 3D2EA in Fiji, wow that amazed me, Shelby WA8FVT was on the mic for this contact, but it effected me just the same. I am forever hooked, and now have even more incentive to upgrade come hell or high water heheh. Go for it. Field Day is a blast. You might also enjoy other contests throughout the year. There are the International DX voice and CW contests (I got Iceland on the latter one year). I'm not sure of the dates though but check the ARRL website. The 10 meter contest in December nets a lot of good DX too. Dee D. Flint, N8UZE |

For some reason I had trouble getting heard when responding to CQs. Might have been too much QRM. Was running about 50 watts into a multiband vertical. |

That will make it more difficult to break through. But part of FD is to learn how to deal with the QRM, different power settings, different antennas, etc. Dee D. Flint, N8UZE |

We built a 32 foot 1/4 wave vertical out of swimming pool poles -- with four
32 foot elavated radials -- it was a screamer on the 40 meter band -- SWR was 1.15 to 1 across the band. Worked the western USA from San Diego area -- no problem. It also tuned to 15M (3/4 vertical) and swr was 2.5 to 1 which the rig tuner compensated for. Worked all across country on 15M. -- Lamont Cranston The Shadow Knows --------------------------------------------------- "Robert Casey" wrote in message ...
