I cannot grab the icon images from the pdf file but if you see nothing
on your dispaly that looks like a speaker or says NOAA the radio is
off as per #4 below.

It bothered me to read he felt so discouraged. I always
find folks here very helpful. I'm never sure of the proper way to
handle a question if you don't know the answer. Is everyone to chime
in saying, " Can't help, don't know." ? I've read such threads and
more often than not the OP responds with a less than polite comment to
"shut it" if you don't know the answer. Anyway, hope he'll enjoy the
radio now he knows how to shut it off.

handheld tranceivers and they were very good. Cost my Dad a heap of
cash back then because they had a 3 mile range! Wow! Wish I
still had them but like loads of other things from that era, Barbie

seeing the one of not getting any replies, I figured I'd "try" to offer
"some" sort of help. Not being familiar with the unit, the help was basic at
best. It doesn't matter if an answer is the right one - no one answer always
falls into that category. The fact is, you "offer" to help in however you
can. It is up to the poster to accept it or reject it - try it or not. If
he - owning the unit - knows full well a suggestion can't work or has
already been tried, then move on to the next.

You managed to get what appears to be the best of help to him - so the
credit goes to you.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the radios and so on. My dad bought us a
set of walkie talkies - 3 channel jobs - and at that time - my parents were
coerced into CB by some aunts and uncles. I had already had a knack for
electronics, tearing things apart - etc. Well, that first set of walkie
talkies - combined with the CB thingy going - was my opening. I wasn't
satisfied with the range - so I started experimenting and finding my work -
to be making some progress - though I was still dumb as a stump when it come
to electronics. So - I then went and bought a bunch of books from money from
cutting grass and doing all sorts of errands, chores, etc. Started learning
on my own - til I got into High School - for a "formal" shop class - and
went on from there. I wish I still had those walkie talkies for sentimental
reasons alone.

Sarah, not trying to pick a fight but the "off" mentioned in the PDF
isn't OFF.

I mean OFF as in , nothing displayed, no options available.. If I
suspect the "new off" for this generation is some pseudo off ?

p.s. Before I posted that question I had downloaded the PDF you speak
of since I hate reading that user's manual that is 2 cigarette packs
big in size....

Not being a smart ass at all! Let's see if I can redefine my words.

If someone offers help - of whatever nature it may be - the poster asking
for the help - in this case - you, has the option to accept those tips/hints
etc - and try them to see which of them might work and hopefully one will.
OR you can reject the idea - maybe because you already tried it/them. OR in
one case - I had mentioned what would have been an outlandish idea - of
placing an on/off switch on the unit, to which you would have had to drill a
hole - thereby making the unit no longer "waterproof" as it is supposed to
be now. So - in this instance - you could have said - SCREW THAT...........
And I wouldn't have blamed you. It "was" an idea - albeit not a popular one.
Not all ideas are feasible. I offered the hole and switch idea "before"
reading the radio was/is supposedly "waterproof". Me, I could care less -
if I wanted that radio and it had no way to turn it off, then a switch would
be in there ASAP - I can promise that.

I think you might be right - some things don't get "completely" shut down -
anymore. That really could suck up some batteries.

Heh, he seems a bit ungrateful this morning. LOL. Oh well. We
both tried and I've given him the Radio Shack part number for some AA
Ni-Mh batteries and charger that I use in my Pro 97 scanner. He can
take that advice or leave it.

Ah, you are an expert compared to my experiences! I share your
curiosity on how things work but have never done any practical
experimentation. My one claim to fame was I tutored a friend for her
Tech class license and she Aced the test! I'm not an Amateur Radio
operator myself but I got through university so she figured I could
help her cram for the test. This friend later volunteered to go to
NYC after 9/11 and she helped provide communications for the
firefighters and rescue workers at ground zero. She was assigned to
a firehouse and ran her " shack" from there.
