How is a frequency counter used? Is it just pointed in the direction of
something and then let it fly to display frequencies
of anything it picks up?

Basically, yes. Just hold it near the transmitting object, and it will read
the frequency that is being transmitted on.

How does this compare to using a scanner scanning from frequency "A" to

"B"
to smell frequencies?

Frequency counter would work much faster at finding the frequency, however,
you have to be relatively near the transmitting antenna for them to work.

What is the range of the frequency counter (in other words from how far

away
will it "smell" frequencies?

Depends of the counter itself and how much power is being use to transmit.
It could range from only a few inches, to possibly a few hundred feet. It
all depends. For what you are looking for get a reading on, I'd say that
you would probably have to be no more than a few feet from the transmitting
antenna in order to get a reading. It would probably be easier to either
hunt them down with a scanner, or just ask somebody that knows them...
