I purchased the Uniden Sportcat 180 scanner recently, mainly to listen to
the airplanes and airport tower ( I live in Guelph, Ontario, about one hour west of Toronto). I have found the Toronto and Hamilton airport frequencies, and have enjoyed listening to these, but I would like to hear more. Searching through the various bands does not produce much. I am new to all this -I don't know what repeaters and other such things are all about, and would appreciate it if someone could point me in a direction where I could learn more. Thank you for any help. |

Thank you for any help. First off, much would depend on your distance to the airport. I'm assuming the sportcat is a handheld, and you just use the little stock antenna. With that setup, you'd need to be within 5 miles to hear the tower - Possibly 10 depending on geography, obstructions ect. You would be able to hear airborne aircraft from a much greater range, for obvious reasons. If your serious about wanting to hear everything there is to hear, you'll likely need to upgrade to a base scanner, and mount an antenna as high up on your house as feasible. Handheld can be used in the field. You can't just connect it to an outside antenna,as this would just overload it. I have a discone mounted on a 15 ft. mast on my 30 ft. house , and can hear the tower of a military base in my area from a distance of about 50 miles. That said,I wouldn't advise seeking too much help in the way of finding frequencies. Much better to search and find them yourself. Take the easy way out, where all you have to do is program a list of freqs you found on some web page, and you'll likely loose interest in the hobby. Add to that the fact that no list is comprehensive. You probably know that the civilian aviation band is 118-140 mhz,AM mode. Theres also quite alot of other radio traffic emanating from an airport in different bands, such as security, crash trucks, service personnel ect. Unless you live in the shadow of the airport, mount a good external antenna, mate it with a good base scanner ,then seek and ye shall find. |
