I'm getting a Scantenna, and I will be using it for both Railroad and
police all between 155Mhz and 162Mhz in my area.

The train tracks run basically north and south, as most of the police
radio traffic will be to the south of me.

so, my question is, has anybody tested the scantenna to see if it does
better facing the incoming signal or at a right angle to it?

I guess what I want to know is when I mount it on the mast, should the
"V" arms be pointing North and South, or East or West, or does it
matter?

Its never made a difference on mine. I can receive about 40-50 miles
from all directions.

ScanTenna is OMNI directional it don't matter what direction you mount
it. My ScanTenna works Great full 360.

Even though the Scantenna is advertised as omnidirectional I did my own
experiments with it and agree with the other posters that there is no
difference in signal strength regardless of orientation...just get it as high
as posible for best results.

Scantenna owners:

Any tips on grounding/lightning protection? I understand the new
Scantennas come with RG6 and spare "F" connectors, someone suggested
getting a Radio Shack CATV grounding block and using the F connectors.
The existing pipe at the top of the pole is grounded with a heavy guage
copper wire running down to a 6 ft grounding rod buried in the ground,
it used to have a TV antenna.

My antenna arrived today (haven't even opened the box yet!), will have a
friend install it 35 feet up a pole..... I hope to do this correctly
the first time, so I don't have to ask him to climb the pole again

The Scantenna is omni-directional, i.e. it does not care how you have it
