Although I laud the availability of Digital Trunk Tracking radios, they (those
responsible for decisions at the Public Service Level) have relegated Scanning
Radios to the level of computers, where one will no doubt have to buy a new
unit every several years to keep up with the changing formats. (if we are luck
enough for the government to deign that we can listen, and if they don't
encrypt all transmissions, and if they don't criminalize the mere ownership of
scanning radios. I can see it now, the scanning radio task force, where your
neighbor will get 1 year of free cable if they turn you in for having an
illegal radio, hell, people will be turning you in for suspicious clothes
lines, lest they actually be concealed antennas).

And the fun is just beginning, digital AM/FM, digital shortwave, etc. These
heathens have assured that any of us that collect radios will have totally
useless units, useful for museum pieces only.

One of the proponents of digital AM/FM radio systems said that the transition
from analog to digital will generate the sale of an additional 2.x billion
radios. It's nice to see that U.S. authorities are so concerned about the
Chinese economy, because they sure won't be made here.

How's Betty?

Anyway, it actually looks Retro if you can ignore the pushbuttons. Not exactly
what we're accustomed to, but, as with mold, it may grow on you.

Its ease of use remains to be seen. I just bought the Uniden 785D (about 6
months ago) and it's a learning curve. I'm convinced that they failed to
correctly execute the Weather Alert Features, and have written exhaustively to
Uniden about this. They steadfastly believe themselves to be correct. I
believe that someone is going to get hurt if they rely on the Weather Alert
feature. I have gone so far as to contact the Consumer Product Safety
Commission, and am actually awaiting a response from Uniden before pursuing it
further.

So many of the newer technologies have been inadequately thought out, daytime
driving lights on vehicles for one. So many people now drive at night without
turning on the headlights because A: The lights are sufficient for them to see
forwards. B: Many cars have digital dashboards, and the information is there
without additional lighting from the dashlights of old. As a result, an
increasing amount of cars can be seen driving through the city without any
taillights. (They never turned on the headlights). Oooops.

You'd think that someone would discover this, but noooo. Modern engineers rely
too much on computers and too little in common sense. Take a drive through a
modern parking lot. The engineers drew the plans for it from a directly
overhead perspective, see how easy the traffic flows. But to us suckers at
ground level, some of the parking lots seem almost impossible to navigate.

Save us from the modern engineer.

Regards.

Doesn't work for me either. I hate computers.

Today it seems to be ending with 1153 rather than 1152. Is this a scheme to
keep people from linking directly to the article rather than the main page?

I'll try again later to see the results.

Regards.

The Pro-96 is on sale now by phone order, no "batch limits". Details at:

Pro-96 Digital Scanner Information Page
http://www.police-scanner.info/scanning/rs-gre.htm

Also, FreqOfNature.com has a side-by-side comparison at:
