Default BC250D puzzle

I've done conventional scanning for over 30 years. However, I'm new to
trunking. And, while I understand how trunking works, I'm having a devil of
a time trying to get the BC250D to do trunking.

I don't know if there is an assumption I'm simply not assuming, or what.
But, there's something I'm simply not getting. I programmed Fairfax County,
VA's 20 trunking frequencies into Bank 1 (channels 1 through 20).

I *think* I programmed a bunch of talk group IDs into M1-1 through M1-0, and
in M2-1 through M2-7. At least, they seem to show up there when I inspect
the Talk Group settings for Bank 1.

I then set Trunk Type to On and Type2 800 (which I've been told is correct
for Fairfax County).

After that, I hit the scan button. It appears to be scanning Bank 1 (as well
as any other banks that are selected), but will only stop on conventional
frequencies.

It doesn't show any talk group IDs. I've read here that you press the "." to
toggle between Bank and ID. However, pressing "." simply displays the
Reverse frequency for the current channel. Nothing I do can convince it to
display talk group IDs.

I've tried pressing the Trunk key... It stops the scan at the current
channel (whatever happened to be whizzing by). If there's a transmission on
that frequency, it then lets me hear it, but it stays on that
channel/frequency, and does not track the conversation onto other trunking
channels.

For some reason, when Trunk Type is On, the scanner refuses to stop on any
of the trunking channels. I hear more of the complete conversation if I set
Trunk Type to Off, and scan as if they were conventional (albeit digital)
channels.

I keep reading that you're supposed to press the Search button. But, when I
do that, it wants to search programmed ranges... it doesn't seem to have
anything to do with the trunking bank(s).

There's something I'm simply not understanding. I've read the owner's manual
cover to cover several times, but still don't understand what I'm doing
wrong. Pushing the various buttons doesn't seem to produce the results
they're supposed to produce. It's as if there's some magic mode setting key
combination that I'm simply not seeing.

Help!

Okay... I did that. But, when I hit Search, it just searches Range 1, rather
than the bank containing the trunk frequencies.

You need to set trunking to on BEFORE you program in the freqs,
and program the freqs in 'trunk' mode.

Once you have the freqs in correctly, hit 'srch' and if things are right,
you'll start hearing the talkgroups.

THEN program in your talkgroups, and hit 'scan'.

Hi, ME

Thanks for the offer. I work from home & seldom get over into DC. I hope I
can gain an understanding here in the newsgroup (I have a feeling there are
more than a few lurkers who might be more reluctant than I am to post
"stupid" questions, so they might learn by watching as sense is slowly
pounded into my brain). But, then again...

Like it has already been said, first you must set up your trunking
bank. Do you ever come in to DC? I'm in Southern MD, and work in the
city, and if so, we can meet up and go over the programming.
