problem solved... small adapter from rat shack
can be connected to the a/c adaptor cable in two
ways... I had it in the wrong configuration.

Appears to work now.

a two prong plug that fits the a/c adapter cord. The have letter
designatiions... I got the H version because it looked like the best
fit, but I'm not sure its the correct one, because I'm having problems
chargiing the battery.

Surely this not some special type of deal you have to buy from
uniden......
