I'm new to the scanning hobby, and of course at this point I already
stumbled upon the cell scanning issue. I curious as to if its still possible. For what I understand is not illegal in Canada unless contents of the com are revealed. Isn't it that most of phones in this days work on digital networks out of scanners reach ?? Im sure this question has been asked many times before but since Im new, I couldn't find recent material on this. Comments will be apprecciated. |

I have been a scanning hobbyist now for years 25 to be specific
(crystals in the ole regency 8 channel). This is a fantastic hobby welcome aboard. Things are very exciting in the hobby and it keeps getting better. Cellulars?? One word. Boring. Yes there is some cellular activity but not much as most have moved to digital. Literally you get maybe two to three hits over the spectrum as compared to 10 years ago when you would get hundreds. Cellulars aside, there is soooooo much to be heard. My advice, take your scanner and search from 0 to how ever high it goes. Do this first before plugging in any channels and just test the waters. Its amazing what can be heard out there. Good luck. Celluar is digital and unless you want to spend time monkeywrenching a scanner to receive the frequencies, scanners sold in Canada and the U.S. are cell blocked. It is illegal, but statistically the chances of getting a firm tap on the shoulder for the actual act (unless you wire it in to a web site or do other dumb things with what you have discovered) is very slim. Celluar is boring anyway. I mean who wants to hear some empty helmet high school girl who goes through one boyfriend every two weeks say "Hi! I'm at the mall". Or some guy driving a toy car Honda Civic with a whale tail say "Dude! we're meeting Stan and Tracy at McDonalds. You shoulda seen the faces on those old farts we blasted by at the intersection of [name of intersection here]". If you think your going to hear your sexy 50 year old neighbour that has a hot body that would make any boy have a wet dream say to her husband that she's hot, wearing nothing but a thong and cooking apron and wants hubby home as soon as he leaves work, you'll be sitting in the chair growing alot of cobwebs waiting for that to happen. Much more to listen to out there. Emergency Services, aviation, railway, marine, RCMP, etc. But most major centres have gone digital, and a few are APCO-25, which is not available on publicly available scanners. |

Check out the RS Pro-96 for APCO-25 scanning.... Somewhat corrected. It's $499 U.S. but... Would be close to $1000 once the exchange and taxes are factored in, not to mention any state taxes that may apply upon purchase. Some stores will forgive the state sales tax for Canadians, but others will not. At that price certainly would not be the first on the block to have one unless it works within the APCO-25 GE/Erickson enivroment we have here in Vancouver (and what ever might be used in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto or other major centres). Not sure exactly which of two kinds are used, but the Pro-96 will decode Phase I C4FM only. It does not decode CQPSK, nor is anything able to decode Phase II APCO-25 systems right now. ...and if the emergency services decide to upgrade and encode the APCO-25 differently than what is now used, then what? The pro-96 is going in the right direction, but not there yet. Still a bit of more travelling to do. .. |
