Default recording from the BC 780 XLT

trying to record traffic on talk groups I have loaded into the BC 780 xlt.

It looks to me that that it can be done but when I go to the menu
commands and set what I think is the correct settings
menu
3 trunk data (select)
bank 1 (select)
down down arrow (limit) to 3 Record (select)
1 on (select)

I have hooked a mono patch cable to the line out and have tried with
both a tape recorder and a windows program that allows me to record
audio from the line in jack of a sound card.

I know I am missing something simple but its escaping me right now.
Any ideas what I need to do?
