Default BC296D trunking problems

I've emailed Uniden several times about this but haven't gotten a response
so I thought I'd post here. I'm using a Uniden BC296D and have the Tempe PD
trunk system set up in bank 1. They are on a Motorola Type II 800mhz analog
system. Some days it works as expected, scanning the trunking system and
showing the talk group when it lands on something. Other days it scans the
bank as conventional channels but doesn't land when there is activity on the
channel. I know this because if I put it on a channel manually I can hear
the traffic when that channel is active. The display still shows as a
motorola type system but scans as conventional channels. I thought maybe
there was a control freq that I didn't have programmed even though,
according to all the resources I've checked, I had all 10 of the freqs in
the bank and configured properly for the Tempe PD Motorola Type II system.
I decided to put the Phoenix trunk system in bank 2 and the Mesa Type II
digital in bank 3 to test to see if it was just the Tempe, AZ PD trunking
system that was doing this. Low and behold, when one isn't working neither
are the others. I've tried a different anntenae just in case I was getting
bad reception on the control channels for some reason and tried in different
parts of my home. It has me stumped. I listened to it all day yesterday
and had no problem with monitoring trunk systems. I turn it on this morning
and it isn't working. It's been going on like this since I got the BC296D.
I previously had a BC245XLT and had not problems at all and used it for a
couple years. Any ideas about what could be causing this would be
appreciated.

Well, it appears that the problem was the antennae. I replaced it with an
adjustable antennae I had purchased for my 245xlt and so far it's working
great. Uniden might want to take a look at this as I've heard several folks
say they've had problems with the antennae that comes with the 296d.

What kind of antenna did you use to replace the stock antenna? I've ordered
a BC-296D and am waiting for it to arrive now, and am worried that I will
have the same problems.

Radio Shack makes a nice antenna if up plan on mainly listening in the
800Mhz range. I bought one for my bc245xlt. It is at:

----------------
www.activesignals.com

Let me try this link again.

http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...=CTLG&category

If the link does not work it is catalog #20-283 sells for $14.99

Description:
Designed specifically for 800MHz reception, this RadioShack Scanner
Antenna is ideal for monitoring 800MHz trunked radio systems used by
police, fire and emergency services.

I might want to check out www.activesignals.com It has a forum board for
discussions of shortwave, amateur, and scanner radios.

I used the Radio Shack Deluxe Scanner Antenna, SKU 20-034 on the PRO-90 and it
improved 800 Mhz trunking over the stock antenna. It's great for all band work.

I replaced this antenna with Radio Shack's 800 MHz Scanner Antenna SKU 20-283
and got great results with the PRO-90 trunking tracking 800 MHz systems and
have another one of these for the BC 250D/BCi25.
Again it works very well giving several more miles of range when listening
mobile!
However it cuts off the conventional VHF band reception a bit, compared to the
Uniden stock antenna, that came with the BC 250D.

If your concerned with both conventional VHF/UHF and 800-900 Mhz trunking then
the
Deluxe Scanner Antenna SKU 20-034, is a better choice!
What kinds of problems are you having now?
