what do you mean by duplex?

a mobile phone is duplex:

i'e it transmits on one freq
&
receives on another

both at the same time.

so two receivers are necessary..

Duplex simply means it is a repeater, that has an input and output (RX
and TX), as where simplex is a direct transmission, not using a
repeater. You can of course hear duplex or simplex with any scanner.

_Full_ duplex is where you can both speak and hear AT the same time
(like a telephone).

_Half_ duplex is one direction at a time.

Simplex is both sides of the conversation on the same frequency.

Both repeater conversations and "simplex" conversations are _half
duplex_.

Unless a scanner has two receivers, one cannot hear _full_ duplex on it
(because it involves potential traffic on two different frequencies at
once. (unless you want to talk about sidetone and mean nasty things
like that...))

of coure you can, if you're close enough to both transmitting parties.

Just program the 2 or 4 frequencies into your scanner right next to each other.

at least, that's my understanding of it.

oops! my mistake. I just realized you meant "full" duplex, where both parties
are talking at the same time.

You are indeed correct that you can not hear that on a scanner.

You can only hear part of it on a scanner.

Thanks Donald for your information. It shows, even after 15 years of
scanning, there are even simple things I did not know.
