Anyone know where you can download a good free scanner program? I see
these ones like Winscan for $50, but don't know if they are worth it. I
would like a free one.

Join either of the following Yahoo groups:

Once you're enrolled, go to their 'files' section and download PC895.
It's the grandfather of Winscan; doesn't have nearly all the features
but more than enough to get you going.

The cable you'll need is quite wierd; the links section has a link to
the 895 FAQ that tells you quite a bit about the needed cable, and where
you can get pre made cables, or DB9 adaptors. Several of those links
also exist in the 'links' folder in each of those Yahoo groups.
