Default Uniden BCT8 Help!!!!

Hi! I recently purchased a Uniden BCT8, but am having tons of difficulty
getting it set up properly. This is my first scanner ever, so I'm not very
familiar with the technology, despite reading the manual a few times, it's
no substitute for experience.

I am primariliy interested in monitoring local police and fire traffic
(trunked, of course, for added difficulty for the beginner). I know what the
control frequencies(channels?) are, I have primary and secondaries, and I
also have a list of suggested frequencies that the unit came with for my
area (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada). I have a list of talkgroup ID's as
well.

I've programmed the control channels as primaries, I've entered the
talkgroup IDs, and the unit appears to be scanning them (Scan ID will appear
in the display). Something is obviously amiss though, because it picks up
NOTHING unless I simply remove trunking, and manually surf in the 820-940MHz
range.. I pick up TONS of traffic around 862-64, but... as it's trunked of
course there is tons of control noise, and it's impossible to follow
conversations.

I'm getting desperate here.. does anyone have ANY suggestions??
