can any of you kind people tell me where i can get a programming cable for
my 780 xlt?

Any place that sells RS232C serial cables with DB-9 ends on it... Computer
stores, eBay, you name it. Radio Shack.... They're everywhere... You need
a female end for the computer side, and then whatever for the scanner side.
Look at the back of the unit and figure it out...

Easy stuff...

The computer side of a DB9 RS232 serial cable, needs to be female.

It's just a standard serial cable, usually male to male.
