Default scanner programming

I am looking for a way to better organize the way I have my scanner
porgrammed. I have a total of 6 trunked systems programmed--5 for one state
and 1 for the state where I am currently living. Additionally, in one bank I
have coventional and trunked frequencies programmed. It's my understanding
that this is not effective to have it setup this way.

I don't program in all the frequencies for the trunked system, just the ones
that are needed for the scanner to start tracking transmissions. This
results in most of the channels in each bank being unused. I also don't
program in all the talkgroups for the trunked system.

I only have two convential frequencies that for police use. I also have a
few air frequencies. Should I combine the police/air frequencies into one
bank or put them in seperate ones? The scanner that I have is the bc-250d

Well, let's turn the question around -- Is the scanner full? Are you
looking for a way to put more systems/frequencies into it? If not, then
I'd say organize it the way you listen to it.

The advantage to putting things into separate banks is that (for most
scanners) you can enable/disable each bank with a single keypress. For
that reason I tend not to put conventional stuff into the same bank as a
trunked system. And I tend to spread out my conventional frequencies into
various banks (aviation, FRS/GMRS, HAM, etc.) so I can choose which ones I
want enabled.

BTW, you might be interested in doing some reading about the new Uniden
scanners, like the BC246T. (Google will turn up all kinds of hits for
you.) It has no banks -- memory is used more like a computer, or a PDA --
it's just a big place to store stuff. Each system or frequency you add
takes up some memory, but there's no artificial limit as to how many you
can add.
