I just went to my first hamfest and I am disappointed. I bought a
Alinco dr590 that the guy said worked great. WHen I got it home, everything in the display lights up, but only sqigially lines where the numbers go. Pressing all the buttons does nothing. I can not even hear static. I can power it off and on however. What could this be and is it repairable? The radio is about 10 years old. Can I repair this myself? WHat should I do from here? |

First of all, wrong news group. BUT - possibility of two things comes
quickly to mind. Enough power in battery pack to only light up the display which doesn't take much. AND/OR - LCD display is shot. wrote in message oups.com... Look up the reset procedure for that rig and hope it works. I also agree
with the other poster, try an external power supply. "Lou" wrote in message o.verio.net... First of all, wrong news group. BUT - possibility of two things comes quickly to mind. Worst case scenario, you've learned not to trust someone just because they
seem friendly and are amateur radio related in some way --- caveat emptor. wrote in message oups.com... I just went to my first hamfest and I am disappointed. Isn't that a dual band mobile? What antenna and power source are you using?
Here is a link to a .pdf of the service manual http://www.thiecom2.de/ftp/alinco/dr590/information/ |

I beleive Hamfests are a traveling caravan of scam artists.
I have been over charged and lied to by long time, respected vendors. The recent Tampabay hamfest had a raffle. It was printed on the ticket "drawing 1:00 pm Sunday". I showed up and waited at the drawing location. About 1:15 I tracked down the local official only to be told that they decided to have the drawing at noon!? I asked, who won the radio? He pointed to a fellow working the booth directly behind the drawing area and called him by first name. Considering the hundreds of (perhaps thousands) of attendees this seemed VERY suspicious. Don't give these traveling band of theives your money (nor the local outfit who pimps for them). The focus on getting to together to share and learn about our fun hobby is almost non existent. These events are only designed for one thing, to seperate you from your money. |

The alt.ham-radio.hf newsgroup has been informed.
The following was posted on the rec.radio.scanner newsgroup by "B L R" . I presume they do not like us Hams very much. " I beleive Hamfests are a traveling caravan of scam artists. That is the typical broad painting with the same brush. No matter WHERE you
go, there will always be an unscrupulous prick who will make the rest look bad. You can't blame all for the sake of a few. ALL groups - etc, have their share of bad apples. L.
