And what about radio shack do you not like?? I guess these means you like

Yes & not saying am loyal to uniden.
At least you get real tech. support if you need it, in the other hand
'radio shack' i be suprised if theirs such a thing/

if anyone says radio shack is the greatest thing since sliced bread,
their wrong, thiers alot better things.

Radio shack suxs! and NO! sensitivity issues

What does "and NO! sensitivity issues" mean??

Radio shack does suck in a lot of ways, no doubt, but what sort of
"support" does Uniden do? What kind of support would you need? Help
operating the radio? If so, there are better sources on the net, that
really know how to use it.

Or is it their service dept??

Lose your radio, twice, like mine?
Send it back with scratches and more problems than when you sent it?
Like mine?

Take weeks or months (SIX!!) to send back you radio, unfixed?
Like mine??

Have no idea how to fix a design flaw, keep the radio for weeks, change
some parts and make it worse (BC200XLT Low Batt indicator/shutoff)? The
only fix? Take a pair of dykes and clip the circuit out!
Like mine??

That's my experience with 20+ years of Uniden "tech support".

I've sent several over the years to RS, and only one was lost (by UPS,
not them), and a couple times it took too long to get it back, but not
as long as Uniden. Even on Uniden made radios, they seem better than
Uniden..

Sorry, yes GRE. So they make the scanners for Radio Shack... Radio shack
seems to be a sleeper for sure as far as popularity , at least for me. One
way I judge equipment is look on eBay to see if they are selling USED ones.
I see as many radios shack 96 for sale as I do the new Uniden hand held.
People say things like I don't use it, or to complicated but I suspect other
reasons for buying a $500 scanner and then selling it on eBay a few weeks
latter.. Your knowledge of Built Quality is very helpful! Seems that Radio
Shack has proven superior build quality in your mind!

GRS??? You mean when I said GRE, the company that makes the scanners
like the Pro 93, 95, 96 and 97??

Over 20 + years of messing with them yes, the GRE built ones, at least
the ones after the Pro 2004 of 1985 or 86 are better QC wise, it's no
contest.

Not to say GRE radios are perfect. The Unidens usually have louder, if
not better sounding audio, and for non trunked freqs, slightly simpler
(1 keypress more per freq) to program. Until recently, with the current
models, the Unidens used a crappy battery pack that was a pain to use,
and couldn't be replaced with ordinary AA batts when it died
unexpectedly. The Uniden RS models took AA batts and that was a reason
to pick an RS model over the Uniden brand. After 20 years, they finally
listened and went to normal AAs.

In most cases the GRE handhelds are better performers, RF wise, than the
Unidens. Intermod is a real problem here and my BC-9000XLT is trashed on
several channels from the police dispatch channel across the river, and
a UHF TV station causes interference in both the 460 and 800MHZ areas.
It's not horrible, but the dispatcher doesn't seem to affect my Pro 2004
and 2005, or my Pro 93 the way it does my BC-9000 or my BC3000.

I haven't had the $$ to get a 96 yet, but I have friends who have had
both it and the BC296, and only one has kept the 296. I have played with
both at the house here and the 96 is easily superior.

Today I went on line and downloaded the Radio Shack Pro-96 manual. I also
noticed other things like a DSP software upgrade. I have to admit that after
reading the Icom IC-R20, Uniden BC-296 and the Radio Shack Pro-96, The Radio
Shack seems like a very Clear Winner based on Ease of operation, and
software updates and flexibility!!! If the Pro-96 PERFORMS as good as
everyone is telling me, then it seems like the logical choice. With
Performance and Build Quality superior have I missed anything???

Reports of problems with the BC296D having sensitivity issues early on. I
guess they just broke. Has this problem now been resolved??? In addition
is this still the best hand held scanner on the market or do you have
another pick for the top radio. Icom IC-R20 is nice but seems to lack the
TRUE scanner options that Uniden puts in its units. Just looking for an
update on this radio. Thank You!!

Nope. The 296 I had was as sensitive as the 96, but intermod was worse,
so I'd take the 96 for that alone. If you program it with the PC
software you can get on the web, it's pretty painless to set up. Using
it takes a little time, but if you have used a scanner before, it's not
difficult.

Icom's problem is that Uniden and GRE have most of the scanner patents
split between them and so Icom would have to pay $$$ for rights. If Icom
would do this, make a digital trunk tracker that had decent scan speed
(the patents again), and normal scanning by bank (Patents!), and the RF
performance of my old 24AT they would have a killer if they could price
it at 500 bucks or so.
