Dear Basil,
In my opinion, the best radio of the three you mention is the Sony ICF-SW7600GR. Please remember that an antenna (properly matched to the radio) is even more important than the radio itself for good results. The best radio in the world will not perform adequately if not fed properly from a good antenna. That said, I believe that the Sony ICF-SW7600GR is the best small shortwave receiver currently being manufactured, both in terms of overall performance and construction quality, and its price is right. As you are in Asia, you may be able to buy a Sony AN-LP1 Active Loop Antenna which is a fine match for the Sony. A forty-to-sixty foot long outdoor wire is said by some to perform well with this receiver also, but I have no personal experience with that. Still, as a long wire antenna is inexpensive, it might be worth a try. I hope the above is of some use to you. Best, Joe BK wrote: I would like to say that I have dreamed of buying a strong short wave. I bought some KAITO shortwave and it did not seem to be pick up much for my taste. It was a waste of money. I can't remember the model number. I just left it back home in the U.S., because it was not strong enough. Anyway, I want to know more about the following radios Sony ICF-11, Sangean ATS 606, and the Sony 7600. Which one is the best to get? I am looking for someone light, durable, and strong in terms of picking up stations of different countries. I am in South Korea at the moment, and I want to hear the U.S. and Canada. I have heard that TECSUN makes decent shortwaves. How do they compare to the Sony 7600? Thanks... Basil |

Joe, I am still not sure where to buy the Sony ICF 7600
besides e-bay. I may have to do that. I went to a major electronics place in Korea, and they only had the Sony ICF-11. It is not what I need. There may be a major Sony outlet, but I cannot read Korean, so I am not sure how to contact Sony. I am sure I will figure it out. I will only use e-bay as a last resort. Tell me about this antenna. Where would I find the AN-LP antenna? Thanks for your information.... I intend to buy this radio. Tell me more about this antenna. Dear Basil,
I see from one of the later posts answering you that there are some Korean outlets selling the radio. If you haven't done so already, I recommend you check them. I should hope that you know someone who can translate the site(s) for you so that you can order the radio and the antenna. The AN-LP1 Active Loop Antenna is a foldable loop, designed for easy transportability as well as good performance with most portable shortwave radios. It is meant to be hung indoors in a window and should not be used outdoors unless there is absolutely no wind. It works only on the shortwaves from about 3100 kHz to 22000 kHz and MUST be physically disconnected from the '7600GR for proper MW reception. (It will turn off automatically if you switch to FM and need not be physically disconnected in that instance.) It mates exceptionally well with the ICF-SW7600GR and is, in fact, turned "on-and-off" by the radio. (It is NOT actually "powered" by the radio as many reviews have stated.) You install two AA batteries (which last a very long time) into the control box, plug the antenna into the Sony radio's antenna socket, and, when you turn on the radio, the antenna turns on as well. (It also has a power switch to be used if you use other than an ICF-SW7600GR radio but you need not use this switch when using the antenna with the Sony radio.) It does not need to be permanently mounted in any particular location, its design allowing it to easily be put away when it is not in use should the user so desire. I find that it makes a major difference over the Sony's built-in whip antenna in the number of stations I can hear and the clarity wuth which I can hear them. As a matter of fact, I now only rarely use the whip, preferring to use the combination when I use a '7600. The AN-LP1 antenna has been discontinued in the United States; there is, however, at least one eBay dealer who ships it to the US from Japan and he does not overcharge on price. Note that I have never purchased from any eBay dealer so I cannot comment on such dealer's reliability. However, there may be a Korean dealer ("brick-and-mortar" or, more likely, "online") who sells it. Ask your friend/acquaintance/co-worker who reads Korean to help you here. In the US currently the price of the ICF-SW7600GR is about $150.00 (it has often gone "on sale" around the holidays) and the AN-LP1, from the eBay dealer, is about $100.00. It may, of course, be priced differently in Korea. I believe that the effort involved will be well-worth it. Good luck. ![]() A friend called Sony in South Korea, and they do not carry it in Korea. At least, that is what my Korean colleague said after calling Sony in Seoul. I was surprised. This lady told him they don't import the radios. I may have to rely on e-bay or amazon. I did see a SW ICF 11, but I have the impression it is not nearly as strong, and I am puzzled why Sony would say they don't sell it, when I saw the 11 radio. I appreciate your feedback. The antenna sounds like a good idea. I will read upon it and maybe buy the radio off the net and have it shipped here.
