TMT Hello TMT, IMHO you would have a hard time finding a better portable than the 2010. The new Eton E1 is getting a lot of good reviews, with a synch detector that's rated highly, and more features than the 2010. I don't have one however, mostly because of the price (plus it's ugly!) For $500 I'd rather go for a tabletop. Also, Red Sun has an interesting portable out, and will be coming out with one in the future with synch detection (can't remember the model numbers, but do a search of this group for "red sun".) As far as the Error 3, that is caused by a problem with the AA batteries that power the memory and CPU. If the batteries themselves are okay, then you may have to *gently* bend the clips that hold the batteries. From what I've read, this is a somewhat common problem with the 2010. If you search the Yahoo 2010 group, you will find more detailed descriptions and fixes for this. Good luck, and let us know if you get another portable. DWP |

TMT Tecsun/Eton/Grundig are now Chinese-made junk - the Eton E1 has had a host of quality-control problems, including the batteries blowing up, when used with the AC adaptor. The Sony ICF-2010 is/was the best portable ever made - Sony is by far the best manufacturer. I have a hand-held Sony ICF-S10MK2 AM/FM $10 radio, that out-performs my digital PLL radios. |

TMT Forgot to mention, that the Eton E1 does not even have an internal ferrite-bar antenna, so you have to use an external antenna for AM, and although Satellite Radio ready, doesn't come with an antenna - at that price, absolutely ridiculous ! **** Eton ! |

DWP I only paid $399 for my E1 and it works great. It performs better than any portable I've ever owned and better than a lot of tabletops I've used. No problems in quality either. I sold my R-5000 and kept this because it performs similarly and has a great interface. I think it was worth it. -- Regards B.H. I told myself that I wouldn't get another portable, but this, or the Red Sun RP300, could tempt me (the E1 is still ugly...) DWP |

I think that'sd the name of the Co.? It was new and checked out by Drake. Still had the protective coating on the dial and original box etc... I don't know if that price is still in effect but I'd still pay $500 for it. It's a great radio and a good a DX rig. I think those that knock it are ill informed. I've been DXing since 76 and have owned hundreds of radios and think it's a damn good radio deserving of more credit than it's given by most that have never even tried the rig. Five bills is not chump change but I always try rigs that are in my grasp economicly because I'm currious and this one I felt was a winner. YMMV? -- Regards B.H.
