I'm a casual listener-- mainly english international news such as China
Radio International, etc., but i'm just getting started and dig the hobby. i am aware all this stuff is on the web but i like tuning it in on the radio-- there is just no substitute for that imo. Which of the following would you recommend: eton e1 sony 7600gr sony icf-sw07 i know there are big price differences -- i'm wondering if the e1 is worth the extra money for the type of listening i do. sw07 is very gizmo-ish. 7600gr gets nothing but praise. what do you think? thanks. |

oups.com... Which of the following would you recommend: eton e1 sony 7600gr sony icf-sw07 For sheer bang for the buck it's hard to beat the 7600gr. It has no tuning knob however, so you can't just "spin the knob to see what's on". You might also consider the Grundig Satellit 800. Can be had for around $350, they regularly turn up on eBay. Good sound, great synch detector, and a tuning knob. I have one (along with many many other radios), and it's generally my most-used radio. Mike |

It is smaller, more advanced, very sensitive and selective, and a sheer pleasure to use. It can also be used for XM listening with the additional ant/recvr. It can be found for about $350 if you look around. Best, -Al -- "Don't get too wrapped up in dogma. Who knows? Because I own one and the SW07 version of the Sony sych-detector is superior to ANY portable/luggable SW radio ever built - period. 7600gr gets nothing but praise. Indeed because the price//performance/value factor is excellent. And it also has a synch-detector but not as good as the SW07. |

deli i agree with you that the sw07 is cool as hell -- i think it's the
coolest one out there-- how has it held up for you since owning it? how long have you had it? i was just concerned it might be delicate-- hands down the coolest one though. I'd vote for the Sony 7600GR on the grounds that it offers the most bang for the buck. In the meantime, if you want to listen to CRI, you probably just need to position your head correctly in order to hear it through the fillings in your teeth--probably on multiple frequencies! A little joke there...CRI drives me nuts. |

Tom K-in-LA, My 'choice' would be the Eton E1 simply because it is the better Radio and has the Larger Speaker for a Fuller More Natural Sound all around the room for Hours of Radio Listening and Enjoyment. Not on your list but also worth considering is the Grundig Satellit 800 Radio. Again it is a better Main Home Radio for the Casual Listener. Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium Shortwave Radio http://www.amazon.com/Grundig-Satell...dp/B00006I5AF/ If I were looking for a Kitchen Radio or Home Office Radio it would be the Grundig Satellit 800 Receiver. If - I were looking for a Bedside Radio - It would be the Eton E1 Receiver. The Sony ICF-SW07 might make a nice Desk-Top Radio but I think that it would wear-on-the-ears as the listening hours increased. The Sony ICF-SW7600GR is a good Radio but for use as a Main Home Radio for the Casual Listener : It would need a Pair of Powered Speakers to give it that room filling sound and make it an Hour-on-Hour Listening Radio. OBTW - I do have three Grundig Satellit 800 Radios up here in Twain Harte, CA : * One in the Kitchen - Beautiful Music on KMPH 840 kHz Modesto, CA * One in the Home Office - News on KCBS 740 kHz SF BayArea, CA * One Bedside - Classical Music on KXSR 91.7 MHz Groveland CA and any thing else that is 'out-there' On-the-Air Late-at-Night ! Plus another one in the Kitchen down in Oakland, CA. The Grundig Satellit 800s are each Wonderful Radios to Listen to as a Main Home Radio for the Casual Radio Listener in any room. radios - it's all about listening and enjoyment ~ RHF |

I have taken the SW07 around the world. I let my non-technical
brother-in-law use it overseas. I myself take good care of a jewel like my SW07 as well as my SW100. The SW07 seems less rugged than the SW100. But you wouldn't want to perform a drop test with any portable. Neither radio has developed any type of defect in either cosmetics or performance. I have owned both for about 2.5 years. The ergonomics of the SW07 w/AN-LP2 is pure pleasure. Of course the tiny speaker, as in most all portables, is a negative. But I use these two miniature portables with a good set of headphones. BTW, the SW100 is hailed by audiophiles to have superb FM audio. Both radios are getting hard to find and each have held up very well in the resale market. If you want one get one now. Yeah, such a fine portable, is it? |
