I owned one of these a couple of years ago, but due to my financial
situation at the time, I had to sell it. Wish I hadn't. It is a very good little radio and boy do I miss it. Performs quite well on all bands, in my opinion. But for shortwave, you have to hold it in your hand for it to receive adequately. I guess the human body acts as a ground. I can't say whether or not it would suit your needs. Just depends on what you're looking for. I was happy with mine. I can't think of a single negative thing about it. Doug Stephen Drummonds wrote: Any comments about this radio?? I love mine and agree with you with (1) exception:
The audio is VERY weak... "Pops" wrote in message oups.com... I owned one of these a couple of years ago, but due to my financial situation at the time, I had to sell it. Wish I hadn't. It's a very good receiver. Even strong SSB-signals sounds very good.
I often listen vhf-air comm. In that area of the freq. spectrum the audio is terribly weak. Roald |

I like it a lot.
Two things to be aware of. Don't lose the manual. Lots of things are non-intuitive. It draws current even when 'off'. Batteries will be dead when you come back to it after a few weeks of inactivity. |

Just curious...

I returned it because it did not seem to do very well in the aircraft (just above the FM band) and SW frequencies. It seemed to do fine in the upper VHF areas, but a trunking scanner seemed more useable for me in that frequency range. I really liked the idea of a really wide frequency coverage in one receiver such as the VR-5000, but in practice, it left a lot to be desired. Reviews I read of that receiver seemed to agree with my assessment. Is the VR-500 different in that respect? If so, I would seriously consider getting one of those instead. Thanks, Tony B |
