The local Imus affiliate, that I can barely receive on AM, has their
AM station now on a HD subcarrier on FM, which it turns out I can receive fine; so that's an increase in my standard of living. I got the Sangean HDT-1 AM/FM HD radio, which is the biggest tuner I've ever seen. It's sort of interesting, and a pretty good receiver, though you get no adjustments you get to make. Here's WJR 760 on AM in Detroit, as received in Central Ohio by and R8B, and then the HDT-1, and then back, using exactly the same antenna via a splitter, and so seeing exactly the same signal http://rhhardin.home.mindspring.com/hdradio.ram It's pretty impressive. That's at around 16:00, when the sun is getting low and other stations are starting to return on the same frequency. There are, however, only 4 HD stations on AM, and only 4 on FM, and the programming fare is no better (save for Imus, my own personal taste). I think you'd have to always have an external AM and FM antenna. If you've got $200 to blow and another receiver for serious stuff, and want to just sort of play around, this is entertaining, though. -- Ron Hardin On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk. |
