Hi. This radio is claimed to come with a built-in 200mm AM ferrite
antenna for "unmatched am reception." I'm hoping this is going to be one of the best am radios out there. Any opinions? |

Who has verified that it has unmatched am reception. Unmatched AM reception is a level of performance I would not expect in a dressed up clock radio. Assuming for a moment that it does have excellent reception, using that AM antenna to null signals will require that a radio loaded with 6 C batteries be lifted on one end and/or rotated. I'm going to guess something like a Sony 7600 or Degen will have better AM performance and be a whole lot easier to handle. I'm hoping this is going to be one of the best am radios out there. Any opinions? $100.00 for an AM FM radio seems pricey. But it is a big impressive white box with 2 speakers and a yellow backlit display, so those features have to be worth something I suppose. And it has 5 yes count 'em folks 5 memories each for AM and FM. |

"... it includes RDS technology to display station name, call sign, song title or other transmitted information..." What WOULDN'T you pay for that??? "...plus it can set the clock automatically." Top that magic! Other clock radios require you to adjust the minute value every 3 months or so. (And the hour value TWICE a year!) And, when you consider it's FM stereo to 2 speakers -- that appear to be a full 6 inches apart -- you got to hand it to the guys at Sangean! [Note to original poster: No offense, but for $100, I think this is a lousy value. You can get as much for less; or a lot more for a little more. Although Universal's including the FM Atlas does sweeten the deal.] -- Col. I.P. Yurin Commissariat of Internal Security Stakhanovite Order of Lenin (1937) Hero of Socialist Labor (1939) |

Unmatched AM reception is a level of performance I would not expect in a dressed up clock radio. The Universal website states: "We have carefully tested this radio here at Universal Radio. It is impressive. We feel it is an exceptional value, and certaintly (sic) one of the best medium wave DXing machines to come down the pike in a long time." Now, one could argue that Universal is trying to sell radios - and one might be right. However, if true, it would seem strange for Universal to make this claim on an inexpensive radio when they could push much higher end rigs for this purpose. Also, I trust Universal's general level of practical expertise, and whent hey make this claim, I see no reason to doubt it. Bruce Jensen |
