How much do you want to spend? Do you want to buy a new receiver or
are you also considering used ones? If you're willing to spend over
$1K and want to buy new, I'd recommend the AOR 7030+. If you want a
new receiver for between $500 and $900, I'd recommend the Palstar
R30CC. If you want something new for less than $500, that's trickier.
Would you consider a PC-controlled receiver? If so, then there's the
Ten Tec RX320D--a great value for the money, but it does chain you to
your computer.

If you're considering used receivers, I'd recommend something from the
Drake R8 line. Then there are the Lowe receivers (HF-150 and HF-225)
which still occasionally pop up on ebay.

Anyway, there are a few suggestions. Please let us know how you make
out.

Steve

I'm surprised that nobody has included the venerable Collins general
coverage receivers such as the 51J-4, R-388 and R-390 (and their
variants). Reliability is implicit in these rigs and there is no
lack of community support for ongoing maintenance. When I need
a reference receiver for experiments or calibrations, I fire up
the 51J-4.

Michael
