I received it yesterday. Performance is pretty good, with the exception of the crummy low contrast display. MW performance is similar to a good auto radio when using the whip antenna. I did try out the radio with a Radio Shack passive loop antenna. MW performance is pretty respectable with this configuration, although you have to keep the loop antenna away from the display in order to not pick up that radiated hash. I wouldn't want to pay 400 or 500 dollars for this radio, but at 239 dollars shipped, it is a good deal. It reminds me of a giant sized Sangean ATS-909, although performance is scaled up a bit. If the display backlight could be changed to yellow, the contrast would improve a bit. Somebody must have been drunk when they implemented that part of the design. Thank you............I will definitely do that. Even on 11 Meter CB, this
thing is super hot with the whip antenna. I did read a review, where the reviewer mentioned that MW signals do break through on the LW range. This is because the 1st preselector has a range of 0.1 to 1MHz. They should have really used a low-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 500kHz for the LW band. This would eliminate the problem. The next range is 1 to 2MHz, which is not bad. Overall, I am very happy with this unit. The audio quality is clean sounding, but I would have to describe it as a "dry" sound, similar to the older Crown Audio power amplifiers. Not bad..........smooth tight bass response, with bass guitar having a well defined "plucked rubber band" sound vs the rounder sound of the older Grundig Satellits. This receiver has tons of gain, so it won't let go of weak signals. Maybe, later on this week I will hook it up to an RF generator and make some sensitivity measurements, but I have no doubt that this radio will easily hear a 0.1uV signal throughout its tuning range. I did hear some repeating groups of birdies in the 27 to 30MHz range, as well as the 25 Meter band, but they were fairly low in level. An outdoor antenna would be able to mask these birdies.
