I currently use a Kenwood R2000 and am considering upgrading to a new
rig. Has anyone here used an amateur radio transceiver for shortwave listening? I'm considering the Yaesu FT-950, FT-2000 or IC-7400 and would be interested to hear how they sound relative to a dedicated receiver such as the R2000. The ICR75, IC8500 and AOR-7030 seem to be less value for money relative to amateur radio transceivers as they incorporate less features and lack performance. |

I can't comment on the Yaesu's, but the Icom IC-7400 is a great rig to use as an upmarket DSP receiver (great value for money too for what you get). A listener BM has two of them and is very satisfied with them. However, if you want to DX on MW/LW you would have to remove the factory attenuation in those bands. See http://arcticdx.blogspot.com/ the 7400 is also sold as the 746Pro I am using an Icom IC-756PROIII which I am extremely happy with as a listener. See: http://www.dxing.info/equipment/icom_ic756_plimmer.dx Also consider a SDR Perseus sold by Martin Lynch. See: http://www.hamradio.co.uk/acatalog/M...com.html#a3181 Many DXer's are moving to the SDR's.
