I received my Wellbrook ALA 1530P (indoor version) a few days ago. My receiver is a tentec rx320. I have been using a couple of 'long' wire antennas. One is inside and runs around a couple of rooms and is about 30m long. The other is outside but not very high and is about 35m long and connected to a length of coax. I only use that when I can have a window open. My house is primarily made of wood so no real problem for internal antennas. My interest is SW only (broadcast + amateur and I hope some digital modes soon). First thing I noticed with the wellbrook loop is the noise level dropped by a huge amount. Comparing the signal when listening to SW broadcast stations with the 3 antennas the wellbrook is far better overall. The wire antennas are ok for strong broadcast signals but fading was a real pain because of the high noise level. Listening to amatuers the wellbrook wins hands down. I have found little to no affect when I have rotated the loop or even when I've laid it flat on the floor. I believe that this is more noticeable on lower frequencies such as MW. I must remember to tune in to the BBC one 198 KHz sometime. So far I am very impressed. I'm still moving the loop around to find the best place for it. I haven't tried it outside yet (it is water proof so can be used outside). My only gripe to date is the time it took to be delivered. About 3 weeks and I received no response to email queries as to the status of my order. Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with Wellbrook Communications. My view of the performance of the antenna areis totally subjective. |

I've used the ALA100 for I guess 5 years. I won't go back to anything else. The ALA100 is a DIY box from Wellbrook. They supply the amp, you supply the loop itself. You need about a 4ftx4ft loop to get the antenna really cooking. I use copper pipe at home and wire in the field. This is a loop I built for use in the field. It is just an umbrella stand base, PVC, fiberglass tent poles, wire, and of course the ALA100. http://www.lazygranch.com/images/radio/loop1.jpg http://www.lazygranch.com/images/radio/loop2.jpg http://www.lazygranch.com/images/radio/loop3.jpg http://www.lazygranch.com/images/radio/loop4.jpg I have a larger version that uses white fiberglass rods from Tap Plastics instead of the tent pole rods. I also have a small 2ft by 2ft loop I use for direction finding. The key to the Wellbrook loop is "aperture." It needs to occupy a lot of space if you want the signal to noise level to be high. I think the ALA100 is the least expensive product they make, or perhaps this is the case for export use since it is very small. Still, with the weak dollar, it isn't cheap nowadays. |
