Gosh what a coincidence! The polls closing on the West Coast was the reason for the timing. Prime Time was extended for Grampie's concession and Obama's victory speech. Yup. The media caught some intense hell in previous elections for calling it well before the West Coast polls closed. They were blamed for possibly suppressing turn-out (which I doubt anyone could prove one way or the other, but it's a plausible concern). Being timid, they don't risk angering their audience. So they're very careful not to call it, even though followers of FiveThirtyEight and other sites already knew when Pennsylvania was called, that it was almost certainly over, and when Ohio was called, that was basically "it". It's not like they REALLY needed to wait for the Western polls to close to predict how CA, OR, WA (super-important engines of progress in the US) were going to go. |
