Nothing in the USA on 1610 kHz according to the FCC.

KSMH 1620 AM (Sacramento, CA) is Catholic Radio

KGST - ESPN Deportes 1600 (Fresno, CA) is ESPN Sports in Spanish

KAHZ AM 1600 (Orange County, CA) Chinese Audience

KTAP 1600 AM (Santa Maria, CA) Spanish

So yeah it 'mite' be a Pirate Radio Station.

Probably some hillbilly town bending the rules on their TIS. Can you
hear it?

If I remember right, 1610 was used to transmit local information at
one time & didn't allow public broadcast....

Did you hear this at night or during the day???

It was this morning. 1610 is Travelers' Information Services. There are
no regular stations authorized on that channel. I asked Roy if he could
pick it up as he is near Oakhurst, but the guy is so drugged-up that never
came to pass.

Forgot to add... for those in the eastern half of the US, these should be
fairly easy DX catches, since TIS stations are only allowed, IIRC, 50 watts,
and don't have squat for antennas..

I'm in Southern California. No Canadian station on 1610 is going to
make it into L. A. at 9:30 in the morning.

You are probably hearing a "neighborhood" station, or someone "house
broadcasting" nearby. 1610 is a popular frequency because there are no
commercial stations in the U.S. that use it.

I "house broadcast" with a couple of AM transmitters here. One is on 630,
the other is on 800. I prefer the low end of the band because I get a
better signal, I have old 1930s and 1940s radios that don't tune above 1500,
and there are no clear frequencies up that high around here.

I also have an FM transmitter going on 107.9. This can be heard for
several blocks in any direction. The 800 AM can be heard a couple of
houses away, the 630 can barely be heard outside my own house.

None are using sophisticated antennas, just wires strung on up on the wall.
With real, outside antennas I could be covering a half mile easily.

Get in your car and drive around your neighborhood, you will probably find
the location of your station.

You're probably right.. but not necessarily. During winter (especially)
AMBCB stations can be heard at very great distances, even in the daytime.

Two examples of such:

580 KFXD Boise/Nampa, ID heard all day, all winter at Astoria, OR, for most
of the winter.
620 KGW Portland, OR heard for several hours during a snowstorm in Lewiston,
ID
610 KONA Pasco/Kennewick/Richland, WA heard most any time in the west hills
of Portland, OR (with 5000W KGW on adjacent 620!)

Doesn't prove anything either way, just fun facts.

I had never seen TV skip until I was 19.. when I was watching local channel
2 (KATU) in Portland and over the span of a couple minutes I ended up
watching the news on CKCK channel 2 in Regina, SK, Canada. RF is black
magic..

The third example was added as an afterthought.. since the station is only
about 200 miles or so distant..
