We've all played with techy-toys that were loaded with features, but
seemed to require periodic trips to the user manual. And occasionally, run across a product that makes so much sense, that the manual isn't even required. ![]() Feature-rich gizmos with poorly-thought-out user interfaces peeve my pets (or is that pet my peeves?) It's as if little or no thought was given to how people use the devices the manufacturer designed. My cardinal rule for any human-to-machine interface is: Simple and frequently-used operations ought to be simple, even if achieving that makes complex and infrequently-used operations more complicated. The logic is, "power users" will have no trouble mastering the whole feature-set, but constantly needing to use extra keystrokes and non- intuitive sequences annoy even "power users" and confound casual users who just want to make a phone call or take a photo. I think one definition of "low touch" is simply: understand and define the basic "feature set", and then make it as simple to use and logical as possible. That effort reduces the learning curve and makes the device easier to use for 90% of the tasks. Which brings me to the Grunding G6. It's a pretty good overall radio for the price. And, it's not too far from demonstrating these principles. The basic functions are pretty intuitive and easy to use. I didn't touch the manual until it was time to figure out how to use the page memories. And even these features are reasonably logical. So nice to see a feature-rich product that works well AND performs the basic operations without a lot of folderall, hoo-haw, and kerfluffle. ![]() May post a review later if there's interest. My main observation is the selectivity is excellent, and sensitivity is pretty good. I wouldn't hook it to much of an external antenna, however. |
