You must be an American who goes to work and then goes home without ever
interacting with his neighbors. It seems that in America bars are cheap,
poorly lit, pick-up spots. Common practice in Europe is to stop by the
local bar on the way home from work (not uncommon for wives and children
to be present), talk politics and sports, and then head on home for
dinner, news at 7:30 PM, and a movie at 8PM (no commercials), and then
to bed.
Even Irish bars with the "Strum und Drang" of becoming "bellicose,
lachrymose, and comatose" offer an inexpensive spectacle.
