Default Receiver Variability

Spent some time, last night, comparing the reception of a Sony 7600GR and a Tecsun PL660. Used only the extendable built-in antennas. While the Tecsun was generally more sensitive, there were some signals (particularly from transpolar routes) that were fairly strong on the Sony, yet virtually inaudible on the Tecsun. African and Oceania signals, however, were far stronger on the Tecsun. Explanations?

Despite the apparent similarity of the two whip antennas, their
directional patterns may be quite different -- perhaps due in part
to the way they capacitively or directly couple into the ground. In
fact, with single-ended antennas that are tiny in terms of
wavelength, the ground system and the coupling to the ground system
are the major elements affecting antenna performance.
