(Please forgive me for not replying to a similar thread; when I view
these groups on a browser the ability to reply is hit or miss.) OK, let's assume you want the following: - A portable, though it can be big/bulky as you don't plan to travel often - Great sensitivity to weak signals & adjacent channel rejection (these matter more than sound quality) - Don't care about LW, MW, Air, CW or what have you, but you want full coverage for SW (including between meter bands) -- You live in an apartment -- You have up to $500 to spend, and would consider used I own a dying Sony ICF 2010 and it's been 10 years since I researched them. Back then I was pretty offended with how women in retail radio shops were treated (kiss my ass, Universal in OH) so I'd like to do what I can from others' advice and reading recent Passport guides. Any info much appreciated! |

"Sony's only" what?
I believe I meant "Sonys only". ooops. In article , Its (The Dawn Soliloquy) wrote: If there was an absolute answer, there would be no competition. Obviously many in this group appear to favor Sony, so if you are interested in Sony's only, please stipulate. Never say never. Nothing is absolute. |

Other than the 392's built in tape recorder, these are the same radio. Both are discontinued at RS, the DX-390 about five years ago, and the DX-392 three years ago. They are still made by Sangean, which gives them the model numbers ATS818 and ATS818cs. http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/ats818.html http://www.sangean.com/worldband.html I wish Sangean had put a (politically incorrect) pack of cigarettes in the picture with that radio to give you some idea how big it is. It is about 12" wide, so it is not as easy to lug around as a YB400, Sony 7600, or Sangean 909. |

The current price for a used SW8 (late model) is about $500. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 80,000 Newsgroups - 16 Different Servers! =----- |

It also has a high enough build quality to carry around by the handle or in its canvas carrying pack. While the Sat-800 may have the same electronics (why some like it), its build quality is too poor to carry it around (and if you did, they only viable way to do so, is to perch it on your shoulder like a ghetto blaster) and too poor for mobile/marine use. It only excels for tabletop use. |

Thanks to all for the input. One last question if I may: How would
each of you recommend seeking a repair service for the 2010? Is it as simple as browsing a few directories of electronics/radio repairers, is it better to find a Sony repair dealer (there is one here in NYC) or is this a case of "The only one I'd trust my 2010 to is Bob in Pocatello, ID. He's repaired over 300!!!"...? And, from now on I'll be nicer to my A/C connection. -- JLM |

Pardon me, in my haste, I overlooked that ability on the SW8. Seems like a
fine radio indeed. Regards. In article , starman wrote: The Dawn Soliloquy wrote: snipped http://www.rnw.nl/realradio/sw8.html This unit is not portable and is $800. The SW8 is certainly portable.
