I live in New Jersey and have a Sony 7600GR SW portable with the small
portable antenna attachment. I am interested in foreign broadcasts that I can pick up without the need for an outdoor antenna. So far I have gotten the BBC, Netherlands Radio and Radio China. Are there any English broadcasts from the Arab countries that are powerful enough for reception on the East Coast? Also, what about India or Pakistan? Philly45 |

How did you construct such an antenna? Would a piece of wire with the right
connector to interface to the radio be sufficient? What about protection from lightning strikes? Philly45 "Diverd4777" wrote in message ... Since I Live on a Lower floor, I just disconnect the whole thing diring
thunderstorm season; when not in use.. I snuck it up onto the roof of our complex one spring night; heard some faint signals never heard before but got too nervous & , in the grey light of dawn, snuck back up there & cut it down prior to going to work. We have had lightning strikes that have fried our elevator circuitry.. In article k.net, "philly45" writes: Diverd4777, Thanks for the information. What about the fear of lightening strikes hitting your outside antenna? Do you have anything built into your design to protect against that? |

Hi Frank,
What frequencies do the Israeli broadcasts use? What UTC? Thanks, Philly45 "Frank White" wrote in message ... In article k.net, says... What I was trying to say is that I've seldom had any luck picking up Arab transmissions, although Israel radio comes in loudly most times. Nor have I ever gotten India or Pakistan. You might want to try picking up their transmissions over the Internet... FW |

Philly 45,
Think About It ! - If the Antenna is 'physically' on-the-side of the Building - - And the Lighting Hits the Antenna - - - The Lighting has Hit the Building In this case the Radio should be the last thing on your Mind. HOWEVER, That Being Said (Written): A. Most Antennas can be Designed to have 'built-in protection' from the EMF Pulses caused by near by Lightening Strikes; and other possible Hazards. 1. High Votlage Discharge * Gas Discharge Tube -or- NE-2 Neon Bulb 2. Low Votlage Limiter * Set of Dual (Paired) Diodes [ -|-|- and -|--|- ] 3. Static Bleed Discharge Resister * 10K Ohm Resister -or- 10K Ohm Potentiometer (External RF Signal Attenuator) 4. Use a good Earth Ground with the Antenna. B. External Antenna Use and Safety: 1. Disconnect the Antenna from the Radio when "Not In Use". 2. Disconnect the Antenna from the Radio during Electical Storms. 3. When the Antenna is 'disconnected' Short-It-To-Ground. 4. Use a good Earth Ground with the Antenna. iane ~ RHF .. .. = = = "philly45" = = = wrote in message thlink.net... Diverd4777, Thanks for the information. You know what, RHF....you've preached to me enough. I'm going to go outside
and ground my antenna ;^) I'll let you know how it does. -- Stinger "RHF" wrote in message om... In article .net,
says... Hi Frank, What frequencies do the Israeli broadcasts use? What UTC? Thanks, Philly45 I pick up Israel on 9435, usually, but they only broadcast in English for 15 minutes. If you speak Hebrew, you're set, though. As for UTCs, I mainly use this http://www.dxworld.com/sw.live It will give you a variety of ways to listen to a variety of SW broadcasts on your computer. I just wish it didn't have as many dead links as it does... (I used it to listen to Iran today. They are really irritated at us. Also, in an interview they conducted with a publisher, I found out the distressing news that a large portion of the Arab world apparently suspects that the U.S. or Israel were secretly behind the terrorist bombings in Turkey as a way of punishing Turkey / bringing it into the anti-terrorist coaltion... I really didn't need to learn that.) FW |
