I highly recommend Radio Shack's "Racing Headphone" (part number 330-1198) if you are looking for a monaural, lightweight headphone that completely covers your ears. I bought a set after reading reviews on eHam.com and elsewhere, and have been very pleased with them. I use them with my Icom R75 and they sound great. They come with a 1/8 inch monaural plug, so you may have to, as I did, get an adapter plug if your radio uses a 1/4 inch headphone jack. The only (slight) downside is that the coiled headphone cord is a bit short if you are going to be sitting back some distance from your radio (in which case, you'll have to buy or make a headphone extension cord). If there aren't Radio Shack stores in Canada, the headphones are available over the web: http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...5Fid=33%2D1198 Here's the link to the eHam reviews in case you're interested: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2151 - Paul |

You can use stereo phones by using an adapter. The 8 ohm "cans" in parallel
would equal 4 ohms for your receiver. If you have 1/8" stereo plug on your headphones and 1/4" mono jack on your receiver, use Radio Shack #274-348. Good DX, Bill, K5BY |

That 33-1198 has an 1/8" mono plug. If your receiver has a 1/4" jack, you'll still need an adapter, such as R.S. 274-325. A caution about using headphones on SW. Because of possible static crashes and other sudden loud noises, especially when seeking weak signals, don't wear your phones completely over your ears. Professional radio operators and smart amateurs slide them off some, usually forward, but whatever works best. Years ago, while working on a marine receiver, and I was listening to SW (not LW), there was a loud pop, and my right ear became damaged. It took years for wax to keep from building up and blocking my hearing periodically, Even today, the hearing in my right ear begins rolling off around 10 kHz. I knew better than to fully cover my ears, but the shop was noisy and the phones had no cushions, so I had the things pressed to my ears. Best wishes, Bill, K5BY |
