For overall value its still hard to beat a Sony 2010. If portability isnt a
big deal then the Ten Tec RX 320 DSP black box rcvr is a good value. Both are
available used on eBay pretty often. Although many disagree, I like the ICOM R
10 handlheld. With a good antenna it gets decent HF SSB and has a voice
squelch that quiets the rcvr between SSB transmissions (not to be confused with
a a carrier squelch). It also rcvs VHF and UHF. I got mine used for $200.

The RX-320 is quite portable. Aside from being able to be controlled with a
laptop which many people carry for other reasons, the RX-320 can also be
controlled with a PDA.
