You should try the new R71 Yahoo-group. It started a couple of months ago:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ICOMR71A and the IC-R75 one which is a bit "older" (2000): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/icomr75 Have a look at http://home.swipnet.se/~w-38231/dxindexe.htm I'm sure you'll find there what you're looking for ! -- D. I agree. I've got one with the 6 and 4Khz filters. Excellent, well made,
radio. I prefer it over the newer R75. They seem to go for a song on the used market. They may require some minor work (trim caps), but well worth the effort. There is a "Yahoo" group that I started, which is dedicated to the ICOM
R 71-A. We've got 42 members so far. You can see what it's all about he http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ICOMR71A/?yguid=73942471 Brian wrote: Does anyone own this model or have any comments about it? How does it compare with an R75? Thanks for any info. Excellent radio and always will be -- MZ |

Icom in general has quality control problems. The R70 R71 and R71a were
among the worse. Thay will be in the shop being fixed more than on the air. Bill, N5NOB |

Hi Bill,
I've had my R71-A since 1992 and have not had a bit of a problem with it; its run flawlessly all that time. Must be someone else's rig that's on the blink... Can't say that I agree with this assessment. The original R70s had some
issues with poor soldering, but beyond that, I have heard of few major problems. The trim caps on the VCO are a weak point with the R71. The good news is that you can fix this yourself for under $20 in the field. Try that with the newer radios. Also, these problems tend to develop after 15 or more years of use. Kenwood was much worse with their potting compound fiasco in the TS440 and R5000. Yaesu FRG8800 has PLL problems the requires repair as well. Icom still supports the R71A, and the US military bought lots of them too. I'm sure mine will go for another 10 years. And don't worry about the lithium battery - it too can be swapped in the field for under $10. Chris VE6RDC Bill Hennessy wrote: Icom in general has quality control problems.
