Dear friends,
I have a sony icf 7600D for about 15 years. I started to upgrade it now because it is not successful in catching weak signals. I live in Istanbul,Turkey and I am especially interested in catching weak local stations of central asian states and Siberia. I use a long random wire antenna. My ICF7600D is good at strong signals of BBC, VOR etc. but, so far not good enough for weak ones i am interested in. Do you advice a table top for this purpose? If yes, what would you advice? Thanks, oan |

Seems to me you have hung too much wire on the radio and blown the front end
= hence the weak performance. The 7600D is a good performance portable, but a tabletop will always outperform a portable -- John Plimmer, Montagu, Western Cape Province, South Africa South 33 d 47 m 540 s, East 20 d 07 m 541 s. I don't know the exact signal levels in Turkey, but if they're anywhere near those in Central Europe, a long random wire will cause significant overload when not used with a decent (sharp) preselector. Apart from that, the old 7600D was also pretty noisy, an aspect that was improved significantly in later models. Do you advice a table top for this purpose? If yes, what would you advice? I'd say for the kind of DXing you intend to do a good tabletop is the receiver to go for. What model to get depends on your budget and whether it's supposed to be new or used. New receivers to look at would probably be Icom IC-R75 (more focused on SSB), AOR AR7030 PLUS (excellent "analog" and good for general broadcast listening along with DXing, but the operation may not suit everyone), JRC NRD-545 (an IF DSP rig with "DXing sound" which also excels in data modes and heeds the "one function, one control" concept).
