I think the speaker is basically there as a convienience, but the radio's size (and the fact that the manual says not to use the Bass setting without headphones) tell me that you've basically got a shortwave walkman. Exactly, and it absolutely excels in that application! Although mine is still "good enough" thru the speaker for hour after hour program listening. No, it's not as nice as my R8 with the Sync Detector on playing thru my Satellit 650's AUX input, but then it doesn't weigh a combined 20 pounds either! Dan I'm the first to admit that after I use my Yaesu for day to day listening for a while and then go back to a portable the portable sounds tinny. The 1102 sounds worse than my DX396-but it is more sensitive. Sensitivity beats a small speaker in my book. I've been using the Degen to listen to Radio Netherlands's nightly newscasts for two successive nights, and the sound is listenable. I haven't tried the headphones yet, but considering that Degen makes no-speaker walkman type radios that use the same headphones, I think Stinger is basically correct. I use portables mainly for day to day listening, saving my Yaesu for heavy duty DX. |
