Default Shortwave and foreign language

How many of you have learned or been compeled to learn a second language
because of your sw listening hobby?

Interesting question... I can read and speak passable Spanish... however,
hearing so many sw broadcasts in Spanish makes me want to brush up so that I
can understand more than every few words that's being said. Spanish is easy
for me to read, but more difficult to understand when it's being spoken
rapid-fire by a native speaker. Sort of the same thing with French. Very
easy language for me to read, but even more difficult than Spanish to
understand when spoken.

FWIW, I took Dakota (Sioux) Indian. I still bring out the old dictionaries
now and then to keep up on my understanding. As you may imagine, I don't
find too many people to talk to using Dakota, but it's still far from a dead
language.

Shortwave has been a huge factor in my learning of French and German and, to a
lesser extent , Spanish and Japanese.
