Have you used one or both of these loop active antennas?
How do they perform? Are they worth the purchase price? Steve |

I just got the Wellbrook ALA100. This is a "roll your own loop" loop
antenna. [You get two binding posts to which you attach your home made loop.] I find the low frequency (BCB down to beacons) performace to be better than any long wire. I'm still evaluating if it is better than a long wire for shortwave performance. It is certainly easier to rotate a loop to null an interfering signal than it is to rotate a long wire. Sad to say, I don't like the Kiwa Pocket Loop - everything else they do
is first rate. I think the Q is too low on SW or something, anyway I can't null anything with it there, and it doesn't seem to pull anything new in. It's also a kludge to operate. Maybe it's pulling more electric field signal than magnetic on SW. It's no big deal on MW either. The regen box for it is a disaster, at least mine was, very unstable and impossible to use. It may be that I got a bad one, but it's been back and forth three or four times, so evidently it meets their specs from their point of view. I just wrote the thing off and don't use it any longer. By comparison their MW loop is excellent, alas no longer made. Stable, deep nulls, very well behaved regen circuit, sturdy construction. Go with a broadband active antenna instead. I have a couple Wellbrook ALA1530's outdoors that work fine. They have an indoor version I think. (I could go into a confusing discussion of the power polarity options and why you want to get the UK version probably and skip their wall wart, so that you can use negative ground.) -- Ron Hardin On the internet, nobody knows you're a jerk. |
